Howdy All, here is the real story about the great diamond hoax... since then everyone knows there are no diamonds in Colorado and Wyoming. They can only be found in Arkansas... many people over the years have told me this. Been called all but a liar... can't wait to take you folks out to find some real rocks and tell you some tales from the real west!
http://www.learngoldprospecting.com/index.cfm?var_file=diamond-fields-hoax.htm Dan's right! There are gems and treasure scattered all over this part of the country!

I just added information on a beautiful gemstone known as iolite (Water Sapphire). This stone is primarily produced from Sri Lanka, but over the past 15 years, I discovered 4 deposits of iolite in eastern Wyoming. Two are world-class and one could potentially host >2.5 trillion carats! Another deposit has giant iolites that could include stones of a few million carats - imagine carrying those around your neck or in ear rings.
The photo album is at. http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/album/84658/IOLITE+%28Water+Sapphire%29. We hope to set up some public field trips this summer to visit these sites as well gold districts and places to dig for opal, jade, ruby, sapphire, garnet, Cape Ruby, Cape Emerald and diamond. I tried to add these guides & publications to Educational Guides on this website, but I continued to get an error so I gave up. Anyway, here is a list of some guides and publications that are free to download.

Just posted a new Album on PERIDOT, CAPE RUBY & EMERALD in ANTHILLS. In Southwestern Wyoming are several anthills in what is known as the Leucite Hills (near Rock Springs) that contain some of the highest quality peridot in the world. Many miles SW are hundred of anthills as well as some conglomerates & rare group of rocks that contain diamond, garnet (pyrope) pyroxene (chromian diopside and chromian enstatite) that produce beautiful gemstones. The pyropes produce a gem known as Cape Ruby in South Africa & these rival the best pyrope gems in the world. There are also very high-quality chromian diopsides with better color than any emerald (these are known as Cape Emerald). Some diamonds are also periodically found in anthills in this area. Still further south is the site of the Great 1872 Diamond Hoax. In 1871 and 1872 some prospectors salted outcrops with thousands of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and pyrope garent and started a major diamond rush. ONe can still find many of the old salted gemstones in this area.

I was asked about kimberlite (one of the host rocks for diamonds). Kimberlite erupts as maar volcanoes and often give the impression of an impact crater. One kimberlite in Riley County, eastern Kansas was actually classified as an impact crater for many years (Winkler Crater) until Dr. Brookins from Kansas looked at it and identified kimberlite in the crater. These erupt like shotguns from the earth's mantle. They begin as a gaseous melt at depths of 90 to 120 miles and gain momentum the closer they get to the earths suface until they erupt. They are under such tremendous gaseous pressure that emplacement velocities are thought to be Mach 2 to Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound). They have so much carbon dioxide under pressure that it expands causing the immediate area to freeze so that some emplacement temperatures have been predicted to be about 32 degrees F. Not very hot for magma.
Diamonds in the kimberlite are from the mantle and are two types - one is inorganic and the other is organic - thus we can all one day be converted to diamonds (and there is a company that will actually take the ashes of your loved ones and produce a diamond - ugh)! |

It took some time and assistance from varous people, but I finally got my profile updated as well as added a photo album on Iolite. Thanks to everyone who helped - I could not have done it without you. I'll try to get an album on the giant opal discovery in central Wyoming in the next few days. In the meantime, I did write a couple of articles bout the discovery and put some information on my webpages - http://geologicalconsulting.pbwiki.com/Opals and http://danhauselauthor.pbwiki.com/Discoveries.
I'm having fun meeting people on this site - have a great day. Dan |

Just came across a new book on Booksurge (and Amazon) which describes some fabulous gem localities including opals >100,000 carats, iolite >1 million carats and more. I followed up on a couple of localities and I have a few thousand peridots, garnets and emeralds. HIGHLY recommended - Gems, Minerals & Rocks – A Guide for Rock Hounds, Prospectors & Collectors
(http://wygemstones.blogspot.com) The book even describes ways to use the internet to find diamond deposits. http://gemstonehunter.blogspot.com/ http://discussionsondiamonds.blogspot.com/
