JUST A NOVICE
I kinda got into rockhounding growing up in my wee years near Newport, OR. Going to Agate Beach when it was nothing but agates you were walking on.....many years ago!!
Geology always fascinated me...how do rocks form...how old are they....all that kind of stuff. Besides, my mom always picked up "pretty" rocks. The ones I pick up are "pretty", not always a so-called treasure (only to me they are)! If they are pretty, unusual or in any other way interesting to me, they are MY treasure!!
My sister is really good at finding the really "Good" rocks. Hunt together and I get nothing as good as she. She has mined Alaskan Garnet, Quartz in Arizona, Agates.....just much luckier and more experienced! Plus, she is older and wiser....just ask her!! LOL!!
Anyway, I am 57, nearly 58!! My partner is my little dog Frodo! I live a block off the beach in Newport, Oregon, and spend alot of time there, when not working at WalMart(aarrrgghh!).
MY FINDS Agates found on 5/17/08 at Lost Creek State Park, south of Newport, OR. These are nothing compared to what others find...mine are pretty small....the largest showing is the jasper, about 1 and 1/4 inch long....but they are mine!! I oiled them to make them stand out a little more!! I would like to take wire and agate and wrap unique liqour bottles with them (have a collection of them, also).....not from personal use, though!! LOL!! My sister, as always, found much bigger and, by far, better ones!! They are in the tumbling process, as we speak. She uses hers for all kinds of sea creature fridge magnets made from agate and wire!! Really cute!! Forgot to say there is some jasper, shell and, of course, some "pretty rocks" amidst the agates!!
A small portion of Sunstone finds near Plush, OR, in May of 2007. Hot during the day....dirty, dusty....real breezy in my tent at night...but all-in-all was a great trip, and well worth it. In one and a half days I found many sandwich baggies full of them on the ground in our campsite. My dog uncovered the biggest, chasing a beetle!! And, of course, see the pretty red....hmmm....what could that be....definitely my favorite find of the trip!!
Just an additional note: I am really a lousy picture taker of things this close....have yet to figure out best background....proper focus and lighting....all those things I should know if I would just read the instructions.....Duh!! What a concept!!
Just to let ya' know, my sister and are a avid rockhounders....being on the beach, agates are plentiful and easy to find!! Once I figure out how, I will be posting many pics of my Agate treasures! Also, into any other kind of rock collecting.......have gone after Oregon Sunstones near Plush, OR......going to Prineville in two weeks for T-eggs........just anything to do with rocks, gems, etc.!! HAPPY HUNTING!! GAYLE
