1. Don't get discouraged! I sometimes get skunked the first time at a new site, but subsequent trips are usually better, you've just got to learn what works in that particular place.
2. Good/ proper equipment (Estwing Paleo-pick, good boots, etc.) will make rockhounding more fun and productive. The one time I dug for precious opal at Virgin Valley I didn't have a suitable pick, went home with very little to show for my $140.
