This piece of scapolite was retrieved from The Lime Quarry Reservation in Chelmsford M.A. There are a few different kinds of minerals in this area, although they may be hard to find due to fallen leaves and other debris which cover the rocks. A good raking, and even digging is necessary in some sections. Dont forget your bug spray! *
FOSSIL ROCK
FOUND
Herkimer, New York West Canadian Creek August 2009
I find lots of fossil rock just walking along the creekside, If you ask me it's more like a river, with swift currents and fast rising water. Great for tubing, which everyone seems to love along the W. canadian Creek. If staying at the KOA campgrounds in Middleville not only can you dig for diamond, but you may also find some fossils along the creeks shore. This particular fossil rock has pieces of stem segments from differnt types of Crinoids (Sea Lily). Fossil hunting has become one of my favorite hobbies, and I will continue to enjoy, and share my finds with all.
BIOTITE MICA
FOUND
Chelmsford, M.A. Lime Quarry Reservation July 14th 2009 * This piece of Biotite Mica was also found in The Lime Quarry Reservation in Chelmsford M.A. Biotite is just one of the minerals thet can be found at this location. Mica schist can be see through out the rocks, leaving glitter along the trails. This piece had to be dug up to find. *
FOSSILS
FOUND
Herkimer, New York West Canadian Creek 2005-2009 * These fossil piece's were found walking along the creek, some were found by breaking open the fossil rock that lay along the shores. Most of these piece's are stem segments from crinoids, some nautiloids, such as orthoceras, cyrtoceras, huronia, estonioceras, and even the belemnite. Everytime I crack a rock open, one falls out. Must be good luck! I just love it when I find these, they look like screws. So cool.
HERKIMER DIAMONDS
*
FOUND
Middleville, New York Ace of Diamond Mine 2005-2009 * There are two diamond mines in the village of Middleville, New York that produce doubly terminated quartz that are faceted in the dolomite rocks. These diamond mines are The Herkimer Diamond Mines and Ace of Diamond Mine. They are located approximately 300 hundred feet apart from each other. My favorite is Ace of Diamond Mines. As a matter of fact, we rarely venture over to Herkimer Diamond Mines anymore, (always being disappointed in not finding anything). Ace is always breaking new material and moving piles around, while Herkimer does not. All our great finds have been from Ace not Herkimer. "Ace is the place, I always say". Whether it's breaking open the dolomite rock, looking on the ground, or even digging in the mud piles have proven to be quite rewarding. So if you ever find yourselves in Middleville, New York check out the mines, and let me know so we can hook up..
GASTROPODS
FOUND
Marshall, Indiana Turkey Run State Park July 2003 * I was really in Indiana for the covered bridges, but found myself on a mineral and fossil exploration instead. I also saw the bridges, but the minerals and fossils just seem to follow me where ever I travel. It's great! Turkey Run State Park has been a valuable part of my collection. The gastropod's that were found in the park came from the beds of sugar creek which resides in and around Turkey Run State Park and Marshall Indiana. There are unique trails and sandstone cliffs all along the sugar creek, and fossils too. This is a great Park to camp with your family, there are many activites to enjoy, maybe take a canoe and paddle your way down sugar creek, or walk some of the amazing trails in search of lost treasure. Start your hike from the cool suspension bridge and follow the trails into an adventure. there is also an old mine in the park but it is now abandoned and closed. Off limits!
JET ANTHRACITE
FOUND
Taunton, Massachusettes My backyard May 5th 2009
I found this piece of jet gardening in our backyard. I was flipping the dirt to plant some daylillies and there it was. Also, during a fishing trip to The Backriver in Weymouth Massachusettes, we found jet laying on the beach. I really think anything found, is a grand find. I'm always on the prowl for the next amazing piece for my collection. Remember, keep those eyes wide because you never know were the minerals can be hidding.
BELEMNITE
FOUND
Muddville, New York W. Canadian Creek July 2009
Everytime I walk along the rivers and creeks of New York my eyes are glued to the ground. There is a great vast of fossil rock out there for the curious to still discover. Wouldn't it be crazy to find a new fossil that hasn't been determined yet, and to be the one whom found it. Sometimes the only way to find a fossil like this one is to break open the rock and hope there is a nice specimen inside. For the less challenging just keep the rock the way you found it, it's sure to have visible traces of fossils all over the outside. *
GREEN BERYL
FOUND
Grafton, New Hampshire Ruggles Mine August 2009
TI really enjoyed Ruggles Mine, although trying to find a place to stay near by was a challenge. If planning a trip to Ruggles take some time to figure out were to lay your head because there are no Hotels, nor campgrounds in the area. We actually got lucky with a seasonal campground that allowed us to stay there for a few days so we could be close to the mines, very nice people, and they actually invited us back to stay again. As far as the mine goes it's a little expensive to enter, but I thought it was worth it. The cave systems there are so cool, I have never seen anything like it before. Hard hats are necessary if planning on walking through the caves. There are many different minerals at Ruggles so bring your field guides with you. The people whom work for the mine are also very helpful, and love to help their fellow miners out. This piece of beryl was one of many finds at Ruggles. Photo's available if needed, just ask me.
GEODES
FOUND
Marshall, Indiana Turkey Run State Park July 2003
All four of these geodes were found at Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. I actually gave the other halves to some young children whom were staying in the same campgrounds as us. They thought the geodes were great and wanted to find some for themselves. I showed them what to look for and sent them on there adventure through the park, which by the way is terrific for hiking, there is one part where you need to climb the ladders that lean upon the cliffs, and are quite unique. Photo's available if needed, just ask.

MOSS AGATE
FOUND
Grafton, New Hampshire Ruggles Mine August 2009 * It's great when you find moss agate like this one above, although small in size, it's still a great find. This is the only piece moss agate that I have ever found, but hope to get a grasp on a few more during my rock and fossil adventures's. I was actually looking for black tourmaline when I found this. The Ruggles Mine has many different varities of minerals that you can seek out and tote home with ya to put on display. Happy mining!
QUARTZ XLS
FOUND
Cumberland, Rhode Island Diamond Hill Park August 2009
Diamond hill park was origanally a ski resort, but then closed due to funding issues. Today the park is home to minerals and even fossils. There is a mountain full of quartz xls. and for the lucky eye you may even find some agate. Many trail's lead you through the park, but the old ski trails is where to go. Following the trails around the hill is the best way to find Quartz and agate. there are dumps through out the paths that are now walked upon by people instead of skiied by them. The side of the hills my be steap in some sections so a sure foot is recommended, not to mention being in semi-good physical shape. The trails may also be steep at some points so becareful!!
THREE TRILOBITES
FOUND
Danube, New York Danube Creek August 2009
Trilobite's, trilobite's, trilobite's, I love trilobite's! This is a great place to find Triarthrus Trilobites. There is a section of creek that has maybe a 75 foot high shale wall, in the shale I was finding anywhere from 1 inch to 2 inch trilobites. There is also a beautiful 25 foot waterfall here. If you find the waterfall, you'll no you found the trilobites. There are posted priviate property signs in the area so please respect them. Ask me for directions.
