1. RE: Thunderegg digging
Feb 1 2008, 9:51 PM EST
so what exactly is a Thunderegg and where are they found? And what do you mean that you're "opening up a new area"? Is digging done all by hand or is equipment involved to get the area opened to the point that hand digging is easier?

Tom: About 30 miles south of Harper Oregon. Not open to the public unless we are there since it is a private mining operation. We plan to be there first of June after going to the sunstone area for a few days to post signs and check how it held out for the winter. Just have to arrange ahead of time so we can meet you there. No shares. Plan to have equiment on site this next later September when we hopefully will have the back hoe there to make the job easier. Wholesale: $1 / lb, Retail $2/lb. Eggs range in size for about 1" up to 2 feet in diameter, mostly around 1 foot in diameter and lots of smaller. Will need a fairly rugged rig, road can get rough. If interested, get back to me for arrangements. Don |

Thank you for the speedy response. Yes definately interested, would like tobring the wife and maybe a couple of my 15 grand children for a day of digging. I am an avid agate collector and there is a spot not to far from me where I find thunder eggs in the 2 inch to 4 inch size but nothing very large. my e-mail is talltomatkins@yahoo.com. Please contact me when you plan to be there and open in june so we can set up a trip. might get some of the other washington collectors in on it too. There are several of us working on a day trip to goldendale washington to hunt carneliens and columbbia basin agates. It would be great if we could set up a similar trip to gather thunder eggs. Check us out on the wet in washington thread.Thank you again and good hunting. |

Must be out of state. Oregon is right way to spell it. We pronounce it Oregun. Love it, don't you? Thundereggs are Oregon's state rock and we have lots of them throughout our state.Fastest from Baker City would be to go East to Ontortia about 30 miles, West on hwy 20 to the small town of Harper, turn south at the gas station unto Crowley Road. This is a gravel road that is maintained fairly well, so a motor home should have no problem until you get to the turnoff. Easiest was to tell you where our claim is go to Topozone.com and search for Butte Creek. It is in the Rufino Butte quad. Right where Butte Creek and Dry Creek come together is where you would be going. South of Harper Oregon off Crowley Road about 30 miles is the turnoff. East down extremely sharp gravel/rock road. We would probably have to come and get you because a motor home would have trouble with tires. You could probably park your rig a couple three miles in on this road before you run into the sharp rocks. Coming to get you would be no big deal for us. Hope to see you there. So far we plan on being in the area on the weekend of the 7th June. Don |

Don, If the finances can handle it RockPuppy and I will be there. I would love to find some thundereggs that will give my 24" slab saw a work out. The 200+ pounds we have gathered from Richardson's Rock Ranch have been no more then 8" in diameter. so finding a couple two footers would be a real treat. Dave |

Wish I could add pics. Wait a minute. I have. Just don't how to tell you how to get there. I made another page through these fine folks on the Travel Channel's site. I had included a pic of one of my piles with big ones. The biggest I can get in my 24" is around 9" in diameter. The slab saw I need to get over here one of these days will cut a 4 foot diameter. The problem though is my 4' lap can only handles about a 3 foot egg.Still impressive. When I get it set up, I will post it somewhere here. When time gets closer, call me and we will make arrangements. Don 503-884-2501 |

"Anyone interested in digging their own thundereggs or join us in our adventures? We are opening up a new area this next year and will be able to bring others along."Greeting and Salutations neighbor, Just diccovered your thread this AM. Sounds like a blast. I always enjoy being a part of something new. I love eggs. I have eaten them, cooked em,painted them, picked and planted them but have never DUG them.So I'm thinking I should complete the process right. :) Have 2 small ones on my mantle at home I look at often that were obtained way back when I was a boy scout.Would enjoy the opportunity to enlarge that by finding one of those large Oregon bombs. Sincerely appreciate your offer and invitation......keep me posted Don by e-mailing me (washatonian@hotmail.com) and I'll do the same. Happy Trails 2 U Andy |

Sound's like the wet bucket brigade may have to form up and plan a weekend invasion on old sagbrush. He say's he should be up and going by june so that leaves plenty of time to gather intel and form a landing strategy for an all out assault on the giagantic thunder egg nest.LOL good hunting Tom |

Man I hate it when I miss a thread like this. I couldn't figure out where all this thunderegg talk was coming from. When ever there is some digging let us know, as we will try to work out something and try to get down there. Don I now can vogue for the identities of Talltom and wacougar and rockpuppy. They are great folks! I may be the only questionable one in the crowd. You see Tom let the scorpions go, whereas I want to deep fry them and eat'm. I think Tom must have a screw loose. lol Count us in if we can work it out for some help on the claim and a little digging. Paul

Hey Third week in may might work. (wet in Washington post by sage brush)If it turns out that old sage brush is going to be up at his site then It might make a great journey. I would be up for a day of helping him straighten up and do a little digging. Let's see what we can set up and how many we can get to go and help sage brush out and explore a little. Tom |
