i have been appointed by the Washington State Mineral Council to act as their representative to determine what actions the Council can take to retain access to private lands in Washington.
Specifically this includes three current problem areas: Lucas Creek, Adna and Studebaker Creek. In our efforts we should all strive to make this an example for other problem areas. Objectives are coalescing along several lines: To draft code of conduct building upon the rockhounders code of ethics that incorporates the concerns of all constituencies. To seek official endorsment of this statement by the regulatory authorities. To determine private land mineral rights owners and managment entity concerns for each site in question and offer specific constructive solutions. Club or Council sponsership of sites, private joint ventures and small stream restoration projects are all possibilites. To establish increased credibility for clubs and club members. We need very good PR to help reverse the increasing pace of closures and regulatory restrictions. This is an exceptional challenge in the face of the greed exhibited by the plunderers who reside almost exclusively outside of our community. Please contrbute your suggestions to this thread. There are a lot of potential tasks that will contribute to these objectives. I will put the objectives and tasks together as the ideas converge. Regardless, contacting Weyerhauser is on the critical path. To respect their privacy, please send me suggested contact indivduals by private message. And if anyone knows the underlying mineral rights ownership for these tree farms, please post that info. Me, I need some sleep...

I am surprised there is not a category under this heading.
I feel there should be. I am sure there are rockhounds out there that have came across some illegal situations, but with no title place to put it, it gets put on the back burner, and eventually becomes forgotten about. The entry I make here is in reference to a possible illegal cabin construction in the Black Hills. One has to stumble upon it to find it! It is, according to the Black Hills Map, 2008 edition, the entire area around this cabin is Black Hills Forest. I have the update to the map and it does not show a private ownership of the land in this area.I am going to check with the Forest Service if they are aware of this cabin, and if it is indeed built illegally. There are no roads to this cabin, not as much as a bike trail. It has been built into a large crevice of a rock and only 2 1/4 sides can be seen. It is definitely an out of the way area. If the Forest Service confirms it is an illegal construction on Forest Service Land,I plan on turning all the pics I have and information over to them. No I have not been a 100% square shooter in my life, but I have been for the last 35 years! If it is a wrongful contruction, it needs to be addressed. It is in the Palmer Gulch area in the Black Hills, and a two mile hike from the nearest road. I discovered this at the end of the 2008 season, and like I mentioned above, it was put on the back burner and forgotten until tonight I was cleaning up some old files. I am posting a pic on the picture page and putting it into my album.

Formerly the San Joaquin River Restoration Settlement Act, H.R. 146 approved by the House and Senate as the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. It is a collection of more than 160 disparate bills, including provisions designating 2 million acres of federal lands as wilderness areas, preventing oil and gas development on other tracts of land, and an expansion of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System and other water protection efforts.
If signed by President Barack Obama, the bill will be the largest conservation measure to be approved in more than 15 years.

If you take your dog with you up to Lucas, watch them carefully. I caught Shaka licking a dead cutthroat trout when we were up there on the 11th. He was diagnosed this morning with Canine Salmon Poisoning. It's easily treatable if caught in time, but left untreated, mortality rates are in the range of 90%. Just wanted to let everyone know, especially those of you headed up there tomorrow, if you take your pooch pet with you.

As much interesting discussion is on this forum; some folks could write an article for Rock & Gem. The work has to be original and has not been been previously published. Rock & Gem pays for the articles that are accepted. It is up to Rock & Gem to decide which articles to publish and when. Articles are between 2000 and 4000 words. Hey many of you guys write that much about one field trip. The guidelines are on the R&G web site: http://www.rockngem.com/files/2008a%20writers%20guidelines.pdf It is great that Lynn the editor is a member of the WIKI.
