Did everyone see the haul a metal detector hunter found in England. It's an unprecedented find that could revolutionize ideas about medieval England's Germanic rulers: An amateur treasure-hunter searching a farmer's field with a metal detector unearthed a huge collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver artifacts.
The cache of gold and silver pieces was discovered in what was once Mercia, one of five main Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and is thought to date to between 675 and 725. For Terry Herbert, the unemployed metal-detecting enthusiast who made the discovery on July 5 while scouring a friend's farm in the western region of Staffordshire, it was "more fun than winning the lottery." One news put the price at 2 million but it likely to go much higher. Who says there is no profit in Treasure Hunting and it is all about the enjoyment of the outdoors. I THINK THE THRILL OF FINDING SOMETHING VALUABLE IS A BIG PART OF THE FUN. Bill

Does anyone know the laws in respect to metal detecting for gold in South Dakota?
Lots of old abandoned farms, old one room school houses and town gathering places to be detected in North East S.D. I'd like to hook up with a few like minded folks, to check a few of them out. Don

We are going to retire soon and want to begin treasure hunting. We are asking for opinions of the best beginner metal detector to learn on, without becoming too frustrated with all the bells and whistles. We live in Alaska and have done some small panning and want to do more now that we will have the time. Any suggestions?

Wow, what a great story and how wonderful that it was your honeymoon to boot, or should I say "to shoe"? LOL. Doesn't matter where you find them, as long as you do! As an Arkansas native, I am glad to see your story here and sure that your wife is happy that your shoes are such a great tool, you do still have them don't you? LOL.

On May 8th, 2009 the “North East Sea Glass Society” was founded. It is made up of members from New England who have a passion for sea glass hunting.
We have had three sea glass hunting events thus far that have been successful in every way. Meeting nice people, strolling the beaches and basking in the beautiful New England coastal surroundings and of course finding lots of sea glass. The enthusiasm of the group and the excitement when someone has a rare find is a sheer delight to behold. Then of course a social gathering over a bite to eat at the end of the day caps the event. We are now planning two more events for this month and plan to carry this effort through the season here in New England. Member ship is open to those geographically connected. 1- DIAMONDS in Colorado & Wyoming. Start out by visiting the Great Diamond Hoax site at Diamond Peak in northwestern Colorado. In 1871, two prospectors salted a sandstone outcrop with several pounds of diamonds, rubies & sapphires & swindled Civil war generals, two presidential candidates, a congressman and other investors. More than 100 years later, I found the site with another geologist & panned out 4 diamonds, 17 rubies and 23 garnets left by the scam artists (find the approximate location by searching for ‘Diamond Field Draw, CO on Google Earth) (see: http://GemHunter.webs.com).
Next, select (CEDAR MOUNTAIN ,Wyoming on Google Earth). Butcherknife Draw is located to the northeast of Cedar Mountain and has dozens of anthills with fabulous Cape Ruby (garnet) & Cape Emerald (diopside) & diamond (http://gemstonehunter.blogspot.com/2008/12/cape-rubies-cape-emeralds-garnets.html). Some of these gems are similar to those used to salt the Great Diamond Hoax area. Finally, select VIRGINA-DALE, CO in Google Earth). This will take you right to the middle of the largest diamondiferous kimberlite district in the US and potentially one of the largest in the world. In 1960, kimberlite was accidentally discovered here, but it was not until 1975 that it was accidentally discovered by the USGS. During sample preparation, a carborundum grinding wheel was carved by tiny diamonds from a rock collected from one of the State Line kimberlites. Since then, more than 130,000 diamonds were recovered from microdiamonds to a 28.3 carat gemstone. The district has fabulous specimens of kimberlite along with gem-quality pyrope garnet (Cape Ruby) and gem-quality chromian diopside (Cape Emerald). In the last couple of years, I found another 200+ kimberlites in this region. Many appear like impact features. (see: http://discussionsondiamonds.blogspot.com).

Upon my arrival here a few months ago. I noticed a theme here.. and It didn't seem to include other forms of treasures.. We all value different types of treasures and most are radially available to us. Take for instance Saturday morning.. I met this couple throwing away some trash. I also noticed some things simply sticking out the bags.. and asked If I could take a look.. They agreed and went off, leaving me the 6 bags of what they called "trash".
I noticed some old toys. stuffed animals and other odds and ends.. But one thing struck my eye.. In a clear package was four coins about the size of a half dollar but bigger and made of bronze.. First I thought "Olympic Medals". Turns out they are called "Challenge Coins" give to a solder that must had been in their family. Taking the coins inside I did some research.. The coins can be valued at or between $7.00 - $15.00 each depending on the subject matter. I couldn't let this pass.. I had to tell the family who threw out the trash.. I caught up with them the next day.. and handed the coins back to them.. "Did you know these where in the trash?" I asked.. They had no idea and simply said it was all trash to them.. after I told them of the coins value.. they started taking a second look at what they were throwing away. I asked them if they had more items they needed to simply throw away, let me know.. and I'll check over the items and even separate them into piles according to their values if any. With in moments they had set out 4 large boxes.. most contained toys and dolls.. Some of the doll where still in their original boxes and never been opened. after about 30 ins I had the lot separated and organized and asked that they return for the results. One area I knew they could get money right away was some old sports equipment. Gloves, softballs, even some new climbing equipment.. all have value and they were just going to throw this stuff away..

I placed photos in an album "Cedar Mountain" about some rare diamondiferous pipes & dike in the Green River Basin. The photos show indicator minerals, characteristic breccia & rounded boulders in pipes as well as a dike. These are difficult to recognize because the pipes and the country rock have similar color & clays. Whenkimberlites were first found in South Africa, they were thought to be dry placers because of all of the rounded boulders (something that these pipes tend to do - round bounders by partial assimilation in the magma during eruption). Essentially all of the kimberlites & diamondiferous lamprophyres show rounded boulders and cobbles - which I will discuss in my upcoming newsletter - (http://gemhunter.webs.com/newsletter.htm).
At one time, I was shown a unusual rounded gneiss & gabbro cobbles in Tertiary rocks south of Little America - might be another pipe? Diamonds were recovered from the Cedar Mtn breccia pipes by 3 different companies. We came across a family who had one large diamond in their collection & indicated that a group of diamonds (2 to 5 carats) were found in this area. Other diamonds were recently found in Butcherknife Draw to the northeast of the pipes. The indicator minerals were found in the pipes, stream sediments & in the Bishop Conglomerate in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. In Colorado, these same indicator minerals were reported in the Bishop Conglomerate on top of Diamond Peak (site of the Great Diamond Hoax - another story). Dan
