We went 5 days last year (2008) most days were very good. One day we found 4 very large garnets that have nice stars in them. If you wnat to find a lot of stones you have to be willing to work for them. We have found several with very nice 6 ray stars and some with 4 rays. We are looking for people in the nw area to go rock hounding with. If you are interested please contact us. We are located just south of coeur d' alene, ID. We are members of the spokane and coeur d' alene clubs. Willing to travel throughout WA., ORE,ID, AND MONTANA, and possibly farther. We know some places to go and would like to find some more. Looking forward to hearing from you.

With the winter weather and my need to fill my rockhounding addictions, I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions of mines/sites that ship gem buckets... Especially any international mines that might ship gem tailings that I can wash at home.

Being 73 is not all that bad. I want to go rock hunting in the western states as I have spent some time out there when working in mines and mills and on construction jobs. My parents traveled a lot and we lived in allmost every state before i was 8 years old. I owned the Deer creek mine in AZ. but the first fuel shortage bank rupted me and it was back to work in the construction world. I still have a good amount of high grade Deer Creek Fire Agates that I work when I want to.
I never want to sell them all as I do not want to have to buy more. The folks that have the mine now are nice people but I have no desire to go see how bad the place is torn up now. The last I saw it they had left so much junk and fallen down camper trailors that it was a shame to the rock hound name. it was no longer a beautiful place that I had loved, It was a junk yard that made me terrably up set. So now I have not a clue as to what all has been done other than digging a big hole with heavy Equipt. My wife and I do have a store on ebay that is HughesGemsAndMinerals, which she manages for us. I do all the lapidary and silver work as she still works 6 hours a day here in our home, telecommuting to San Diego. Currently we are looking for a good place to move to in one of the western states, where there is lots of open areas to rock hunt in, and there are not so many fences and keep out signs like in Texas. We hope to move next spring if we can find a place that we can afford, and not being wealthy, that is not easy. Our largest saw is an 18", but we use the 6" trim saw more than anything else. Anyone have great suggestions on an out of the way place, that is still affordable for a working class retiree and working wife? By the way, I have a little book I wrote at http://web.bigbend.net/users/leonscabin/ProspectingBook.PDF. Thanks for the warm welcome!

The Fano Mine on Little Cahuilla Mountain in Anza, California (Riverside County) has been put up for sale. This is a tourmaline mine and some of the history is listed on the realty page - www.imrealty.biz
I was putting together a display case for my club's show which includes an aquamarine specimen from this mine. When I googled the name, the second entry listed the mine as being for sale. What a dream-come-true that would be to own a real mine. However, investing in 3 sons in college leaves very little spare change - so if there is anyone out there who would like to be "silent partner" - I can muster up plenty of free manpower to co-operatively work this mine on weekends. I was up at Hansen creek this weekend and was told by three separate people that the active claim above the mineral council claim is now open to the public and owned by the mineral council due to non payment and complaints from collectors. Can anyone confirm this?

Hello all,
We (http://www.durangosilver.com) have been in the business since the 60s and have specialized in American Turquoise. We are partners in several Turquoise mines in Nevada. We also mine Highgrade Silver Ore out of Silverton, Colorado. I have added a lot of information to this page about turquoise. I have building an online turquoise museum for 8+ years now. Many, many people have stole my information and added it to their site. I do not care as I put it out there for the public to learn and be better educated. I hope all enjoy what I have contributed.

One of my favorite Western Agates is Graveyard Point. Has anyone collected at the site recently? I have a great deal on high quality Graveyard. What a weird name for such a beautiful agate. You would think it would be called Autumn Folage Agate or Oregon Showy Plume Agate. Good GP is selling for a great deal for rough and finished pieces.

We went on a day trip out to Adna today and the pullover spot and the other side of the street with the primitive road are plastered with 'No Trespassing' signs. What happened?
I thought that was BLM land. Is it privately owned or recently purchased? I know Lucas creek has had some shady digging practices this year (and I noticed some similar issues at Adna but not quite as severe) but the signs differ from there. I hope the end is not here...... I was just getting my feet wet. Other than the newly posted signs nothing seems to be different; no clear cutting, no houses going up, no filed in pits....... Confused and super duper bummed, Brennan

Just got back from Hansen creek lower dig site today and found some new interesting stuff that I didn't know was there. One small almost perfect cube(1/4") geothite pseudomorphed after pyrite and one broken one that would have been 3/4" with a single crystal growing out of it. And also just above the hole I was digging in was a clay concretion laying under a large rock. I'll post pictures later but I was wondering if anyone has ever found anything like that up there. Also found some more amethyst crystals but not as large as my last one. Thanks all.

I'd be interested in hearing from someone who's been to the Peacock mine, or other black opal mines in northern Nevada. The program Best Places to Search for Treasure from a few years ago gave a good account of this mine (saw it again today) and it seems like one of the best places to be able to dig in virgin material for this extremely valuable gemstone. Thanks.

Hi All,
I trip (literally! I have the sore ankles to prove it!) around the more remote and forsaken parts of Oregon and Washington quite a bit. What do you all look for (tells) that a locality near you might have something interesting? During the wandering process I have discovered a massive amount of fossils, crystals, agates and pertified wood, however I am completely naive to the proess of locating something which may have to be excavated. I know there are rules about digging pertaining to the specific land you intend to dig on but, what do you look for at your favorite sies/roadcuts? I have been reading about the relationship between perlite and thundereggs, and I have not quite been able to wrap my brain around what I am looking for. I found a baseball sized round nodule (I have not cut it in half so I have no clue what it contains) in a loose popcorny rhyolite ashbed I was working for crystals and fossils and I didn't think thundereggs occured in that particular locality (20 or so miles outside Antelope). I've been to Richardsons and have dug eggs there but that's it. Do all beds look similar and have the same composition? What do you watch for in roadcuts? What is your favorite rock to hunt?

Was up at the upper level today- (thanks Syonix) and ran into a couple of stumbling blocks I hadn't heard or read about.
First- there is a gate that is locked on the road, where the larger shooting range is on your left. (We walked up, no big deal, but for some folks it might be.) Then- some one has clearly moved into the parking area by the trail head that leads down to the site. You have to walk through their living area to get to the trail. Trailer, generators, a dog run, and a nice rock pond (!) There is a dump truck parked out on the road. What's up- does anyone know? There are no No Trespassing signs anywhere, and specifically not on the gate that locks off the road. The up side is that they have cleaned up that little target shooting area- trash and bottles etc.

Glad to back on site after a long time out in the field. Had an experience a few weeks ago that shook me up- and I'm curious if you all have had similar adventures where the getting was good but the odds too high. So...you turned back. My partner and I were in a rock slide chute. We'd been there before, the minerals were good but the story was that they were better father up. We knew there was some real danger- we had helmets on and we'd posted a falling rock sign below. But you know...the thrill and the charge of finding bigger and better pieces overroad the first warning sign- I stepped in a muddy area and started a water mudslide- and had me to the second warning sign- 15 feet up a rock face and suddenly there wasn't a foothold- before we got the picture. My partner is great- he saved me from crashing and burning. But we looked at each other and said- okay- what are we doing up here? We are way too old, have too much to lose and we need to realize this place is too dangerous. So we agreed that we were done with site, and we aren't going back. How about you all? What was your threshold big or small? Look forward to meeting you out there- happy hounding. Stellar Jay
