Having recently attended this year’s Northwest Rock hound Retreat for the first time which was held at the Hancock Field Station September 7-13 in North Central Oregon I couldn’t help but reflect back upon this most interesting and unique location.
Through a collaborative agreement between the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the NFMS (Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies) rock hounds from British Columbia, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California were once again able to gather for a Fifth year to expand their areas of interest in a wide variety of lapidary activities and to use their free time to explore some of our public lands which surround the Hancock Field Station, in particular, the Clarno Unit one of three units which comprise the 14,000-acre area known as the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. The Clarno Unit is located 18 miles west of Fossil on highway 218, and offers the public a chance to walk through and gaze upon eroded ancient mud slides which formed cathedral shaped spires 40 million years ago.Speaking of public lands and Fossil, one of Oregon’s lesser known towns, there is a site located behind Fossil’s only high school, situated on a hill-side on school land, where lies one of the richest fossil beds of the Bridge Creek flora found in Oregon which is easily accessible and open for public collection for a nominal fee of $5 which provides a needed source of revenue to Wheeler High School. These fossil beds formed some 30 million years ago when volcanic ash fell in the region, during the formation of the present-day Western Cascades. This site has yielded over 30 species of plants, most of them belonging to the genera that are no longer native to the Pacific Northwest. Fossil hunters and collectors can dig unlimited fossil specimens in relative comfort and safety without fear of being fined, arrested or having their fossil finds confiscated. ...........cont

I went out this morning to hit Bear Creek today and I found this beauty, 80 pounds by my bathroom scale. Totally translucent with very nice color. had to dig it out of the creek bed. Couldn't wait to share, details later when I get the trip report up. look at the slide show of the pictures I snapped real quick here;
http://s790.photobucket.com/albums/yy184/jadadara/BEARCREEK/BearOrBust/Bonanza/?albumview=slideshow Worth a look. BTW, Did everybody's computer catch the tick? ;-) I haven't seen it this dead during the week in a while. ~Zeke

I know I keep pumping these out, but I had a back log and I didn't get to get out this weekend, so I did this instead. Besides, it helps me analyze my finds, and should help others in the off chance they stumble on these pages. I tried to make them at least mildly entertaining, if not informative, even if there are no "wow" pieces. I'll start bringing the camera out with me so I can show you pretty places I go, and what you are really up against when looking for the jade. I have a feeling I sometimes make it look easy, but really it's a lot of work. Not your casual beach combing. I regularly spend 8 to 10 hours searching a trip, and as this trip report shows, sometimes come back with very little to show for it besides an aching back! I'm going to cut all week, so you will get to see some of the hidden "wow" later. Enjoy the Folly.

My wife and I stopped here with my parents en route to visit her parents in Florida. We only stayed about two hours and came away with about twenty nice specimens each including ruby, sapphire, moonstone, topaz, amethyst, rhodolite garnet, and even a couple tiny emerald shards. We didn't see anyone using the salted buckets, but we came away pretty psyched.
On the way back from Florida we decided to stop again and were glad we had the chance. We didn't find as much, but a teenage girl upstream of me on the sluice got one of the "Mega" salted buckets. There was so much stuff in that bucket of hers that I was finding stuff in the sluice. I tried giving it back but she didn't want it. I might try one of those next time for amusement. I will say that we're already planning how to get back to Franklin, NC. We did try to find the $30 a day Mason Mine which is supposedly near Rose Creek but we couldn't find it. I want to try some of the other mines, too. That said, we'll probably at least stop by Rose Creek Mine because we had a good time and it was pretty laid back and fun.

Say Sketer that looks like a pretty good haul for the day. Is that a chunk of Pet wood at the top of the photo? Find any more of those special points? We did Bickleton on fathers day for carnelians and met with success.

We recently visited the Cryo-Genie mine & had a blast (pun fully intended). Dana, the mine owner, gave our family of 4 a private mine tour & then let us dig in the tailings. The tour was absolutely fascinating & Dana was such a hospitable host. We had fun digging in the tailings & there were probably only about 4 other people around digging with us. It was very cold at the end of May when we were there, but we stayed until our fingers were too numb to move. Of course, we didn't find anything gigantic, but we found several pencil-lead sized tourmaline pieces - one was even pink + green!
I can't wait to make this an annual trip! Thanks, Dana!

| waguy | Field Trip for Obsidian Mid May. | 17 | Jun 5 2009, 11:35 PM EDT by pvjjh | ||||

Thread started: Mar 15 2009, 3:39 PM EDT

The NW and CA Federation of Mineralogical Societies are having a get together May 20th thru the 25th at Lassen Creek Northern CA for Obsidian. See article in the March issue newsletter of NWFMS under clubs & organizations to the left in search this site box. There is a nice map the Forest Service puts out on their site. Look up Modoc National Forest - Recreation Actives on the right hand box click on rock collecting, once there click on Obsidian Mine Map and print out.
I have collated down there for many years and know the best spots to go and how to dig them. At Lassen creek is the Electric Blue, it can be a challenge to dig that material but I will be there to show you the best way to do it. I will bring samples of rough and finished pieces of the four sites down there, plus I will be giving away some finished pieces in some type of drawing or raffle all five days of the rendezvous. Prior to meeting at Lassen Creek on Wednesday May 19th I will be at Glass Butte digging for Fire and Flame Obsidian. Anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome. I will arrive there on Saturday May 16th in the afternoon and be there for a few days. At mile post 77 on Hi-way 20 about half way between Bend & Burns take a right over a cattle guard and stay on the main road. I will be some where eighter before the cattle pond on the right or on the hill above the pond. I drive a white Mazda pick up with a lid on the back. I have a map of Glass Butte that the BLM produced for mining claims that I can send you. It show all the roads and what type of material is there. Just send me a message with your e-mail address and I will forward it to you. I am really looking forward to this trip. At the rendezvous there will be tailgate displays, map exhanges a great way to meet others and learn about other collecting areas. If you have any questions or need more information just let me know. Nine of the few, the brave, the proud, the sore this morning motley crue had a blast at Studebaker Creek yesterday. The weather cooperated wonderfully, the mud was plentiful, and most probably are feeling muscles they never knew they had. But, lots of great looking agate came out. Stay tuned for more reports and pics! It was a great way to spend a day.
