This Labor Day, I went out to my favorite fossil hunting spot with my kids and their friends. It turned out to be a very exciting day! First I found my very first megalodon tooth. It is roughly 5 to 6 inches and in perfect condition. In addition, we found a strange tooth that we cant seem to identify. In the field, as I was tired and wet and muddy, I passed it off as perhaps whale and tossed it in the bucket. After a night's sleep and a shower it seems I am stumped. My latest guess is perhaps some kind of prehistoric crocodile? The root is what is particularly striking about this tooth. I have pictures posted on my profile page which I dont know if I can display in this thread as well.

This was found by my son Jeff while he was looking for leaf fossils for a class of grade schoolers. A very unique and interesting find. Andy and other Stone Rose fossilers might enjoy this. This was not found at Stone Rose, but just a few miles from my house.
Pic: http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/photo/6577044/Flower+Fossil+found+July+8%2C+2009 What do you think Andy??? Treasure page, scroll down to the bottom to see several pics of the flower and a green garnet we happened to find in a can here at the house. http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/page/Treasures+pg+5 Now off to Canada to see Bob and the Rock Candy Mine. And even to the real Stone Rose on the way back. :-) Paul

Analysis of the fossil record combined with geologic data provided by the IGS, indicates that these are fossils of marine life that lived in a warm shallow sea during the Silurian and Devonian periods of the Paleozoic Era, dating back between around 430 - 345 million years ago.

OK...even though we did have to cover fossils when I was taking geology at UIC, I am no paleontologist. But, I have been able to identify the fossils in this specimen. The phylum is Bryozoa and the genus is Polypora. This is a colonial coral which lived in a fan-like structure of calcium carbonate. It lived from the Silurian to the Permian period during the Paleozoic Era, which makes these fossils anywhere from 225 to 430 million years old.

We have wonderful lithic quaries along the Cibolo Creek betweem New Braunfels and San Antonio where the Native Americans mined for lithics and left many artifacts. Some are almost 10,000 years old.

I missed you guys, my old pc fried and had to wait to get a new one, but just this last weekend we was able to go to lake cumberland at the conley bottoms boat ramp, the last time we was there I was finding fossils along the shore line, but now that they are keeping the lake levels way down you can find fossils every where. I will be posting pics soon. The main ones that I was finding were crinoids-taxocrinus, I have a fossil guide so I looked them up and I found a few clam fossils. So if you are in the southeast kentucky area you might want to check out the shores of lake cumberland, they will be having the lake down for a few more years.

I know there are not many fossil collecters but I thought you might enjoy seeing a crinoid free from the matrix. It is a Silurian Age Eucalyptocrinites.

Hello everyone. I am in OK City for my grandson,s first birthday. I stopped at one of my favorite fossil sites and found several great fossils. I was able to identify all but one. The site is a Mississippian Byrozoan reef. Above the reef (shaley limestone) is a sandstone river bed that was an ancient delta. The one I am not sure of is spetacular. If I identify it I think it would bring a good price (if I sel it) maybe $150 dollars. Around Tulsa there are some species unique to the area including a jellyfis like creature (Conostychus). There are lots of branching bryozoan fossils, brocapods, crinoids, and many other ocean fossils. There are some sharks teeth. If you are in the Tulsa area email me and I will put you on to it. I have posted many sites in Oklahoma, this site I will share on a request bases.

Aaron,
The wife and I was admiring what we thought was a piece of wire inside, then, we realized "hey, wire was not even invented when this geode was formed, so further investigation followed and School of Mines said it was some kind of vegetation that was present in the right time under the right circumstances. That sure blew me away!
