Adventures in Argentina
| This is the story of the ADVENTURES of : ............... Ricardo & Claudia Birnie in there home county of ARGENTINA. Come and explore the World of Amazing Agates found in one of the most beautiful countries in the World |
| | |
| | This agate was found in the North of "Neuquen" Province , about two years ago ; after this stone was cleaned, it showed pretty good quality amethyst in the geode. This source is near an inactive Volcano called "Chachahuen" . Climate is extremely hot or extremely cold. Material obtained is very low quality , and it´s not worth returning there. We only keep about 10 "interestin" specimens we collected during a very very hot and windy day! |
| | This is a formation at the same source as above. Now , it is forbidden to enter this source ; there are oil Companies prospecting , and it is surveyed by armed guards. |
| | One of the first agate sources we found in the Patagonia Region . This was our favorite place to collect . In this source we found some of the best agates that are now in or collection. This source was over exploited by a German dealer who hired some people to collect agates in rough , and purchased about five tons of material. Fortunately , as the people he hired wanted to sell kilos and not quality , when he cut the material , it was so low quality that he didn´t return. |
| | This is Claudia trying to find "THE AGATE" . As you can see , no mechanical procedures are involved in our agate collecting trips. We were asked by some dealers if we would sell them agates in rough. This is something we will never do ; it would turn our hobby into pure business instead of fun! |
| | "Piedra Parada" means "Standing Stone" in English Language. This is a lonely Monolith measuring 240 meters high. Some Thunder-Eggs are found in the surroundings. |
| | Claudia , looking for some agates . She picks them by hand . |
| | This is me in an "Estancia" near "Zapala" City ; this City is known as "The Wind City" . In every season of the Year , no matter which , wind keeps blowing day and night . This "Estancia" is now administered by the fourth generation of owners , and it has it´s own cemetery with tombs of the founders who arrived here in year 1843. By the way , all we found during 4 days was just ONE agate , although we did find some outstanding jaspers. |
| | This is Ricardo , resting after walking several kilometers carrying his and Claudia´s back pack. |
| | This is Claudia at the same place as above , with our old and uncomfortable Toyota. It is the only vehicle we found suitable and strong for our kind of trips where roads are to be made while we drive on them. |
| THIS IS THE STRANGEST AGATE THAT WE EVER FOUND |

| The long-dormant Chaiten volcano blasted ash some 20 miles into the Andean sky forcing the last of thousands to evacuate and fouling a huge stretch of the South American continent. ick column of ash climbed into thstratosphere and blew eastward for hundreds of miles (kilometers) over Patagonia to the antic Ocean, closing schools and a regional airport. Citizens of both countries were advised to wear masks to avoid breathing the dangerous fallout. --![]() Chaiten " Volcano started erupting , although now it has been lighter than the last time. It has been difficult to collect more agates. The following link provides information on the eruption: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24483158/ |
| The landscape of Patagonia is Breath taking. |
| | This place belongs to a friend , it is near a clear water stream where trouts are abundant. |
| | Another view of friend´s place . Really Heaven on Earth! |
| | Just wandering around , we found this clear and pure water stream. |
| | View from our friend´s house in Patagonia. This picture was shot during Summer. |

| | This elusive animal is called "Guanaco" , it is like a small "Llama". Hundreds of them can be seen while driving on the Patagonian roads. |
| | Claudia is looking for agates . Please , take a look at the never ending horizon! |
