THE BEST PLACES TO HUNT
Regions can have multiple good spots to go add details to build a complete guide.
Location #1:
Rock Candy Mountain, Grand Forks (Boundary area)

General description: Historic fluorite mine converted to family-friendly collecting site.
How to get there: Join a guided Safari trip, run by the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce. Trips run several days/week in spring/summer. Serious mineral collectors prefer more expensive Vugs trips, where a fresh vug will await each collector.
www.rockcandymine.com
Grade this location: (A to F): A GPS coordinates:

Handy to bring along:
1. Closed toe shoes (rocks are sharp!)
2. Collecting bag (plastic grocery bags will not work (rocks are sharp!)Barite crystals on fluorite, Rock Candy Mt.
3. Sunscreen and lots of drinking water.
Helpful notes to newcomers: Fluorite occurs here in green and purple. To assess gem quality, dip pieces in water and hold toward the sky ... choose fracture-free pieces.

Banded material holds together better than pieces of one color. If your cutting wheels are silicon carbide, avoid pieces with white stripes, these are quartz, and will undercut. If you use diamond wheels, the white striped material will cab beautifully.

On Safari trips, dig into the rock pile for pieces with clay adhering to them. These were at the edges of vugs, where the fluorite had fewer impurities, and therefore is more likely to be facetable.

Location #2: Frasier River beaches and gravel bars
Island 22 north of Chilliwack
Under the Rosedale-Agassiz bridge, North side

General description: Jade and agates are found, particularly in spring.
How to get there: Anywhere along the lower river valley, good access exists near Harrison, Hope, and Yale.
Grade this location: (A to F): GPS coordinates:

Handy to bring along:
1. Boots
2.spray bottles, water
3.
Helpful notes to newcomers:
you have pay to park at Island 22, $5 I think

General description: Plant, insect, and fish fossils, open to the public spring/summer/fall
How to get there: 8 k west of Cache Creek
info at www.dll-fossils.com
Grade this location: (A to F):A+ GPS coordinates:

Handy to bring along:
1. magnifier
2. sharp, flat chisel
3. Sunscreen & hat

Location #4: Sasquatch Provincial Park
East side of Harrison Lake

General description: Possible Quartz
How to get there:follow the only road on the east side of Harrison till you get to the park.

We are planning on heading to Harrison lake on Sunday. Anyone have any ideas on the best places to look along the road to Sasquatch Provincial Park?
