Deer Creek
Spring '09
When it comes to the stuff on Deer Creek, I no longer draw a line between the hydrogrossular garnet (HGG) and the jade as they seem to comprise a series within the metasomatic/serpentinization reaction zone (rodingization),and are very similar in appearence, so whatever I note is just an "educated" guess. Chances are that both are represented in the stones.

No proper TRIP REPORT, but a copy of an email to Aaron (Retiredoldfogee) upon my return.
Always Under Construction
But done until future tests and cuts...
Pictures link to slide-show albums of the stones on Photobucket See note on pg1

Jade Stele
Jade Stele
I found this one in a flood or over flow channel....love those floods....
Stay tuned, we are in the process of recovering this rock...
This one is going to make some sculptor very happy. The knob on it could be carved into an animal perched on the patterned jade, or carved into an inscription with a relief of some symbol. It would make a nice tombstone too ;-) I may need it after trying to get it up the creek bank! Btw, the pick is 16" across.
Compare with 'LittlePillyStele' from Pilchuck
35 Pounder
35 Pounder
I found this one, oddly, by the shape of it...somehow. It was covered in grey silty mud in the bottom of a depression of a dried out overflow of the creek. I love patterned jade like this. There appears to be a sequence in this stone, and perhaps the bottom third is made up of another species altogether...perhaps metachert...or maybe its just a more opaque jade, but you can see the transition area, so some sort of mixing or metamorphic process is captured in this piece.
1st Pounder 1/2
1st Pounder
23 pounds
This one appears to be a quality jade, assuming the "windows" are representative of the whole. It was found recently weathered out of a cliff face (of glacially deposited material or older creek bed?).
If you read the "trip report" I found this one while I was walking between the river (creek) and the cliffy bank cursing the fates.
aLittleRindy
aLittleRindy
Stuff like this is just as likely to be chert, as it weathers a similar color. To me though, any translucency grades it up to likely jade.

Cuts added to top of slide-show
Comparable to to 'wedged' from Pilchuck...nice color
AndThisStuff
AndThisStuff
I'm sure there was plenty of this lying around, surely not jade. I was just wondering if this was somehow part of the Hydrogrossular series or some sort of calcite...but see also "WhiteGreenOpaque" below. And "justOdd" seems to be similar. Another sample here or look on page 8.
BandedBeauty 1/3
BandedBeauty
7 pounds ? I don't have a good scale for weighing. This size falls within the margin of making an error.
The colors here remind me of the hydrogrossular garnet, but the quality screams jade. I believe only a SG test will answer this question. I found a jade slick of similar material, the "HelloRock" that can be found on page 10.
BandGPebble
BandGPebble
Just a pebble.
Beauty 1/5
Beauty
7 pounds (see above)
Similar to the "1st pounder" above, but with more white included. great quality, but for the possible weak fractures that seem to run through parts of it. Is the white jade or rodingite(hgg)?
BlackPebble
BlackishPebble
Actually dark green opaque jade. I found this one in the woods on an old trail camping stop on the way to the creek. first find of the day.
BlackRind1 3/3
BlackRind1
I've probably past a lot of this stuff up as the rind disguises it as other common stones on the creek. I'm uncertain as to the relationship, if any, to those common ones...they seem more quartzy though. Compare this with this from deer creek as well.
BlackRind2 1/2
BlackRind2
See above.
BlackWallHGG
BlackWallHGG
This would be a rodingite of the blackwall variety heavy in hydrogrossular...or so I believe.
BoulderChatoyant? 1/3
BoulderChatoyant?
15 pounds
Or I'm a fool. I couldn't manage to chip anything off this one so I brought it home. If it had just been serpentinite, I believe it should have broke. It doesn't look quite like a serpentinite...let me go check it with a magnet........I'm a fool, its soft too so its just a pretty serpentinite. You can see where I was hitting it with the hammer, that should have been a clue. Why I don't do a field scratch test more often is beyond me.
BuriedJade 2/4
BuriedJade
I found this one in the same manner as the 35 pounder, but recognized it by the fractured areas. Always a worry that its a fancy looking chert, but I highly doubt it.
ChatoyantBoulder? 1/3
ChatoyantBoulder?
18 pounds
This appears to be the same variety of jade as the "Unusual Jade" I found on an earlier trip.
ChatoyantCobble? 1/3
ChatoyantCobble?
There's a hint of botryoidalism here in the white. The green spots are reflective(?) (I think that's the right term). Maybe the same thing that's going on with the "chatoyant" stone and "unusual jade" above. Or perhaps those are actinolite crystals...hmmmm. That seems likely.
ChatoyantSlick? 1/3
ChatoyantSlick?
This is a combo rock with the "slick" part being like the boulderchatoyant above that turned out to be serpentinite. What the bulk of the rock is though, I do not now know, but it is a more common stone that can be found. I just recently found a similar looking configuration on Grandy creek 'Prize' (or look on page 9), but the "slick' was more substantial and of a very pretty shimmer or reflective green...but that attracted a magnet. So this rock is for the fool inside me.
CreamPebble 2/2
CreamPebble
jade or hgg, small but very nice.
DeerStuff1
DeerStuff1
see hgg note at top.
rodingite?
DeerStuff2 1/2
DeerStuff2
This has got a ribbon of very nice material running through it.
See hgg note at top.

rodingite?
JadeeToe 1/2
JadeeToe
Pretty, but just jadee, I'm not prepared to pass judgement on it. And it being so small, I probably won't bother figuring it out. I put this one in my "Ogres' Toes" collection.
JustOdd 1/3
JustOdd
Just odd. seems to be jade, but really likely isn't...I'll get back with some basic test results....it attracts a magnet, the light green areas are soft but the white areas and some of the green near the white is properly hard...see also "AndThisStuff" above to compare
LastStand
LastStand
I was running out of time with the camera, thus the name. That's a clean fracture i took off it. Seems kind of junky, but may turn out to be nice material...whatever it turns out to be.
LightWhiteSpots 2/2
LightWhiteSpots
By light, I mean it seems way too light weight to be jade, but it is an interesting stone.
MetaBot 1/3
MetaBot
OK this stuff. Recently on Grandy creek I found some more of this stuff and broke it opened...its worthless, but is curious. It may be the same as "IsBot" from Pilchuck. It seems to be botryoidal something that has been later metamorphized...but that's just appearances. This stuff isn't too uncommon.
MetasomaticBroken 2/2
MetasomaticBroken
see hgg note at top.
rodingite? Or am I looking at opaque jade? I do believe that's the case for most of this rock.

Yes, cuts on other samples indicates good jade.
MetasomaticPebble
MetasomaticPebble
see above.
Naga 1/4
Naga
7 pounds
This is like all that "deer stuff" above, but with extra nice material (like the ribbon in "Deer Stuff2" and earlier finds (see Jade galleries earlier pages) on the outside...
OneSideRind 2/2
OneSideRind
More of the likely jade maybe just nice chert...I sure wish they weathered differently...but at least a future SG test will be definitive.
PurpleGreen1 2/3
PurpleGreen1
IS JADE PURPLE????
That's the question these pieces pose. If not then what about hydrogrossular? rodingite?
PurpleGreen2 1/2
PurpleGreen2
See above

Cuts added to top of the slide-show,
neat material, very purple
PurpleGreenRon 1/2
PurpleGreenRon
a bit brecciated, rodingite and the purples...see above
PurpleInside 2/2
PurpleInside
More purple going on here, but with whites

Cuts added to top of slide-show
I really like this stuff, whatever it is.
PurpleRon 2/2
PurplkeRon
Blackwally rodingite, but purple
PurpleWithMoss 1/2
PurpleWithMoss
This purple is spotted with white
RedGreenJorJ 1/3
RedGreenJorJ
I should run some tests on this one...jade or jasper or even serpentinite.....not ferrous, very hard all around. Verdict, jade, maybe a jasper.
RindBroken 1/4
RindBroken
Much oranger rind than the other chert like rinds...usually a sign of better quality jade than the duller looking brown rinds. (the orange tint comes out when wet or oiled, thus it will jump out at you when you are wetting the creek rocks)
OrangyWeathering 3/3
OrangyWeathering
See above, but this one is only partially weathered...the black would be the serpentinite. This one is fairly translucent, and besides its chunkiness, is good material.
RoadRock 1/2
RoadRock
The area where I park is an old clear-cut lot by the opposite side of the road as the creek. The road is covered in cobbles apparently from the creek (probably to fill puddles). It was comprised of all the same kinds of common junk as the creek so I looked around for jade and found this one. Might be nothing, but might be jade of the chert like weathering. I decided not to bust this one (because I think I see a nice pattern in it), but will put it to the trim saw soon.

A small cut added to top of slide-show
greyish with specks...need to make a better cut.
ThreePebbles
ThreePebbles
Two little jades and a purple pebble.
TwoPiece 2/2
TwoPiece
This is like the other metasomatic looking rocks but a bit more translucent...but with more flaws (the internal weathering). Notice the patterned greens. I know there is a process to remove the internal staining, but of course, whats the point?
Twoshot 1/2
TwoShots
I think this is just a garnierite, but I was impressed with the degree of translucency of the green...maybe agate in garnierite? Compare with Seamagate on the Other Rocks gallery.

Cuts added to top of slide-show,
interesting, but not useful stuff.
WhiteDendrites 1/4
WhiteDendrites
8 pounds
I should have called this one HalfAndHalf, as it appears the dark green side is serpentinite (soft and attracts a magnet) and the white side is jade (maybe hgg, but it seems more jade-like). I really like this one even despite the serpentinite as I like natural patterns in rocks.
WhiteGreenOpaque 1/4
WhiteGreenOpaque
Jade or nice HGG. But compare with "AndThisStuff" above (but I think the resemblance is superficial) and with "JustOdd" also above. Now compare with this earlier find from Deer creek (or here on the Gallery Page, first stone)...Probably my favorite opaque material.
Below are the only rocks I brought back from the first attempt at recovering the Stele...I didn't have time for a proper hunt, but came away with some awesome jade anyway.
CreekSide 2/3
CreekSide
I found this one just as we were leaving, mostly buried. I almost past it up as the first spot I scratch tested was soft (around the whitish buff area), but that stuff is just a remnant of the host rock (serpentinite, or the "rodingite" that is siad to be on the selvages of jade lenses, which this is a very fat example of). It is translucent solid green...I'll get a weight for it soon...25 lbs
BrownAndBand
BrownAndBand
This one is slightly botryoidal, but of poor quality. Hopefully there is something good (patterns maybe). Note the rind well.

Cuts added to top of slide-show,
aDeerGrey 1/2
aDeerGrey
See the mixedupcobble on page 8...I think its the same stuff. The white here is likely rodingite, the grey a mystery. Unlike in the mixedupcobble, the grey here is hard and translucent.
Oble 1/4
Oble
I found this one while digging the Stele out of the creek. It is a very nice opaque deep dark green jade.
