Location #1: Sillimanite


General description: Sillimanite was established as the sate mineral by an act of the Delaware General Assembly in 1977. Sillimanite has a fibrous texture reminiscent of wood and can be cut into cabochon gems showing a chatoyant ("cat's eye") effect.
How to get there: Hoopes Reservoir and Brandywine Springs areas. From Willmington take HWY 52 (Kennett Pike) north. Turn west at Campbell Road which leads to Hoopes Reservoir.

In order to capture the "cat's eye" the stone must be cut with the grain of the fibers.:


Location #2: Belemnite Fossils














General description: A Belemnite is the fossil remains of an extinct squid with a cone shaped shell. In 1996 the Belemite was named the state fossil.
How to get there: Belemnite fossils can be found along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
