General information on Herkimer Diamonds
[Natural or cultural history of the item, trends in value, tips for where to look for it, etc. ]Herkimer Diamonds are 400 to 500 million years old. Found in the Mohawk valley in central New York, are world reknowned for there clarity and luster.Crystals found here are faceted by nature and have a hardness of 7, a real diamond is 10, which gives it a close race. Herkimer diamonds are actually Quartz . The thrill of opening a pocket full of Herks , is like finding the gold or treasure chest.
Where to find it:
Middleville N.Y. St. Johnsville,Little Falls,all in the Mowhawk valley of Centeral N.Y.The best quality found in Middleville N.Y.What areas of the world are famous for this treasure?

Tools needed: Sledgehammer, chissels,crack hammer,gloves,first aid,collection bag, and lots of hard work!!!!!!!!!!!
Special skills needed: be able to walk on unstable ground and the thrill to find that special piece

Thanks all you Herkies out there for the wonderful photos! We started collecting so many great ones that I started a special Hermkimer Diamond Photos page right underneath Herkimer Diamonds to display them all! Keep 'em coming! If you're able, it'd be great to add captions to them as well, so we can all appreciate the photos even more! ;)
