Letterboxing
What is Letterboxing?
Letterboxing is a lot like geocaching in that the purpose is to find 'treasure' deliberately left by others and to leave more for future comers. The only difference is that it's done the old-fashioned way because all you really need are clues and a good pair of hiking boots. True, it can be a bit more difficult, but for those who are up to the challenge it's loads of fun!
Letterboxing began in the mid-1800's in England and there are an estimated 10 to 50 thousand letterboxes in the United States alone. You may be surprised to find just how much has been hidden right in front of your eyes!
Letterboxing Basics
Before you go hunting there's a few things you'll need to do. First, since the letterboxes are listed on the Internet, you'll want to find a site that lists in your area. Some excellent sites are www.letterboxing.com and www.letterboxing.info and more are listed through the link below. Simply search for your area and choose a cache that sounds good to you. The listings will supply you with clues to the letterbox cache. Be careful though, as some are meant to be tricky! You'll also need to assemble all of the appropriate hiking gear, a list of which is supplied below. Lastly, rally the troops (letterboxing is an awesome family activity) and hit the trails!
