THE BEST PLACES TO HUNT
Regions can have multiple good spots to go add details to build a complete guide.
Location #1: Souris Gravel Pit
(Local beach, park, etc)

General description: The following stones can be found in the pit: petrified wood, agate, chalcedony, jasper, quartz, sandstone, epidote, pumice, and basalts. Agate is a translucent rock which is made of silica type crystal. Jasper is a colored, opaque agate, and petrified wood is a piece of tree that had the wood fiber replaced by silica crystal and other minerals under great pressure. Epidote is a solid colored stone that is pleasing to the eye and touch. Some of the stones can have fossils on and inside them. Basalts can be found in colors like red, yellow, and greenish grey. Pumice stones can be found in people's washrooms used for scrapping off callused skin on their feet.

How to get there:

Souris is of prime interest to collectors of agate, the semi-precious stone which attracts hundreds of "rock hounds" to the Souris pits each summer. Situated on the high banks of the Souris River at the mouth of Plum Creek, Souris is 230 kilometres of Winnipeg, Manitoba's capital city and only 65 kilometres north of the North Dakota border.

For more information visit:

Helpful notes to newcomers:
At The Rock Shop, collectors may obtain a Pit Permit ($10.00 per vehicle per day) for their excursion into one of the best collection sites in Manitoba. Twelve acres in size, the pits were worked for gravel as early as 1930.

Location #2: The Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre houses the largest collection of marine reptile fossils in Canada. If you like dinosaurs or sea monsters you will love "Bruce" our 43 ft (13 mtr) Mosasaur, the fiercest of all the marine reptiles. He's bigger than a T Rex and just as scary.

How to get there:
The Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre is located in the lower level of the Morden Recreation Complex.

In May 2005 the center acquired a 109 acre property on the Manitoba Escarpment just north west of Morden, which is fossil rich. We aim to create a field station in the near future.
