Trip Report for 07/12/09

After the best trip ever on Deer Creek (see Jg v1.0 pg 10) Aaron showed me an easy access spot on the Stilly to collect, about (less than) a mile up from Deer Creek. It was getting late, so we didn't get very much collecting done. At first we waded out into the river shallows, but I find that kind of hunting very difficult. It is extremely hard to tell what is what under even a little bit of water...better to look at mud covered gravel bars in my opinion. That and the water was much colder than at Deer Creek and I found my energy quickly sapping in the water. All that said I did find some interesting rocks, at least one jade, a curious rodingite, a nice red and a couple of possibilities. River collecting is harder (as the jade to junkite ratio is higher) but might be easier in the since that the jades are more likely to be rid of all the serpentinite that they are often hiding in. I don't hit the rivers often enough to make that determination though.

Jadar
This is the one that made Aaron decide I had "Jade radar". I found it covered in mud as we were walking back to the cars with out even trying. It is a bit odd, sort of botryoidal. The light areas are a bit blue-green in spots with a little translucency showing in places, the black areas are fairly hard and pretty, but can be scratched, so are likely just nice iron poor serpentinite.

Stillaguamish Rodingite
Blackwall rodingite, with some interesting translucent light greens (not likely jade, maybe epidote). The black is soft, the light is hard and the stone as a whole is hefty. I've always been curious if botryoidalism occurs underneath that black, so I will be cutting this one up to see.
...Um, turns out it's jade. Very nice mottled light green translucent jade. Pictures later today. But no botryoidalism under the black. I cut about a third of it off, luckily not ruining what I plan for it now that I see it's quality (dice). It's still a rodingite by my measure though.

Not likely jade, just an interesting patterned wannabe. I didn't pick up much, so I've included even the slight possibilities. It is heavy, but I think those are bedding planes, not mottled jade.

Most likely the common green river polished jade wannabe...you always have to bring back 1 or 2 of these just in case....A quick whack with the hammer and to make sure and now it swims with the fishes...junkite.

Stillaguamish Red jade (;-) or Jasper
Always on the look out, but we all know what this really is, jasper...note the yellowish areas (though the pictures make them look a lot more prominent from some unfortunate glare). What I find interesting about this rock are the still clearly defined schist like selvages...hmmmm....

Yup, another one of these either rodingite or white rind jade or simulant. Just a little something for the saw to unravel.
