I'd be interested in hearing from someone who's been to the Peacock mine, or other black opal mines in northern Nevada. The program Best Places to Search for Treasure from a few years ago gave a good account of this mine (saw it again today) and it seems like one of the best places to be able to dig in virgin material for this extremely valuable gemstone. Thanks.

RE: Virgin Valley Opal fee digs

"Boy, turn your back for a minute. On OPALS. VIRGIN VALLEY OPALS. Maybe the rain has stopped. Set records back almost a hundred years. Let me catch up from earlier questions.
The Opal Queen is Open. 150 a day for bank digging. New banks have been opened. He was charging 50 for tailings. Jeffs a great guy and it does have opals.
The Peacock tailings are 75 and bank 180 this year. They do have 3 rentals. You can tent in any of the designated campgrounds or in peace on your own claim. The peacock is the resort with washing machines and hookups. The CCC camp just has the hot springs showerhouse and several pit toilets. Rainbow Ridge is only a mine and they went to 70 for tailings this year.. " Great info, thanks for sharing. Just wish I was closer to do some opal mining. Paul

I would like to plan a trip out to the virgin valley area. In researching the internet, I am finding things like; make sure you have a high clearance vehicle, the last place for gas and food is Denio Junction, make sure your spare tire is in good shape, make sure you have more than one spare tire, if you get stranded don't walk away from the vehicle stay where you are wait a couple of hours or days and if your lucky someone will find you (long after your body has turned to dust). What I want to know is who has been there and just exactly how dangerous are these roads? I live in Wisconsin and will be flying out there and I need to know if I am going to risk ruining a rental car/suv. What can I expect and when is the best time of year to go? Are there any easier to get to places to mine? Can anyone give me any useful info? Anyone who has been there? Thanks.

There are three main fee pay mines there. All can be driven to with a regular car or pick up. There is a camp ground after you turn off the highway. It has a shower and there are portable toilets. Each of the mines have a fee to dig there. Depends on what you want to do. If you go on line to rockngem.com look up past issues for october 2006 for the Bonanza Mine it has the hours and contact. Also has the same info for the Royal Peacock. October 2004 has info for the Rainbow Ridge. The only info I know is current is for the Bonanza. The other two you might have to do a google or bing search. If you are spending a few days there I would try all three mines. lots of luck Glen

"Hiya All: Sorry I got virused and busy so had not been back for months. My info has always been there at virginvalleyopal dot com. I couldn't really reprint it all here. I don't do a fee dig (rouge cabin) but maybe in the future if I can just get moved. The Gewm show here this last weekend was rainy and mud made digging difficult. I did see a few nice things found. I do hire out as a tour guide for this country specifically as opal teacher or helper." Maybe you could give a brief summary and post the link on the National Directory as a perminent link to the information. Thanks Bill

"You aren't going to believe this!!
I live here in the St. Louis Missouri area, but I had a run in at the local tavern with a couple of old prospectors that got ousted off of their silica claim up in Wyoming from some large company in Silicon Valley (The were pretty bummed out about it too) Since they were originally from here in the St. Louis area they just packed up and came back home to their old place.
They told me a story about one of the main roads leading into Las Vagas where it goes over a bridge that crosses a river right out side of town on the outskirts of Las Vegas there.
As the story goes, the creek bed under that bridge is littered with gold and diamond wedding rings and engagement rings from women that got married in a drunken stupper while in Vagas and quickly got them enalled the next morning when they sobered up. Also allot of engagements and wedings seem to end in Vagas... these rings and necklaces get tossed off the bridge as these women drive out of town.
Someone with a metal detector could probably clean up out in that area if they were to find the spot and hunt the area in question. I can't remember the name of the road or Hwy right off the top of my head, but if you live in the area you might know where I am talking about.
If you check it out, let me know what you find, if anything." I remember reading in one of my magazines about a spot for prospecting just off a bridge. they showed the set up and that it was good color...can't remember if it was in gold prospector or treasures
