New Jersey

What this area is known for:
  1. The southern tip of New Jersey at Cape May is known for it's 'Cape May Diamonds'.
  2. World famous for mineral specimens from the Franklin and Sterling Hill mines - especially fluorescent minerals.
  3. Unique minerals from traprock quarries.
Biggest finds in this area:
  1. I've found many Cape May diamonds - clear and colored quartz - that can easily be tumbled further, then made into some awesome jewelry. I'm from the Lebanon, Pennsylvania area, but I usually try to go to Cape May several times during the spring, summer and fall.
  2. Collectors of minerals know the value of great specimens from Franklin and Sterling Hill. The minerals are found in museums across the nation.

Local appraisers: Name, contact info/website

Local geocaching/treasure hunting clubs:
  1. American Federation of Gem & Mineral Societies http://www.amfed.org/
Best time of year to go: Usually in early spring, just after the rough winter tides have pushed larger 'diamonds' in to the beach. Or, just about any other time when you want a laid-back day searching for the biggest Cape May diamond, ever! You can also fish there without a license (salt-water). They've got some great flounder fishing right from the beach. Other helpful resources:

THE BEST PLACES TO HUNT
Regions can have multiple good spots to go add details to build a complete guide.
Location #1: Sunset Beach at the southernmost tip of New Jersey.
(Local beach, park, etc)

General description:
How to get there: Go to New Jersey, and then go south on the New Jersey Parkway. Keep going until there's nothing but the Atlantic Ocean in front of you!
Grade this location: A+ GPS coordinates:

Handy to bring along:
1. Small and medium sized containers and kiddy beach toys - shovels and buckets with holes to wash the diamonds. Use the small containers to put the diamonds in as you stroll on the beach. Then when they're full, take them back and put them into the larger buckets.
2.
3.
Helpful notes to newcomers: If you continue walking down the beach (away from Cape May), you might want to be conscious of how the folks are dressed further down the beach. The lower area is a 'free beach' where bathing suits are optional. But no matter, there are plenty of 'diamonds' before you get close to this area.

Location #2: Sterling Hill Mining Museum &
The Franklin Mineral Museum

General description: Over 300 different minerals were found in the mines of Franklin and Sterling Hill. Sixty new minerals were described at these sites. Not only are the museums first class but mineral collecting is available for a small fee.

The following site gives examples of the types of minerals found in the mines:

Hey, I'm new to treasure hunting and want to try to do it as a hobby occaisionally. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any areas for any kind of fossil, rock etc. In northern New Jersey or anything within about an hour distance. (Mid-South NJ, East/NE PA, or South NY). If so, I extremely thank you if you'd be able to leave a url for the place, phone number, address etc. any of those is fine. And maybe what can be found there and any other important information. THANKS A LOT :)
