Location #1: Flint Ridge

General description: Flint Ridge is a nearly eight-mile long vein of high-quality flint located in Licking and Muskingum counties of eastern Ohio. Hundreds of quarry pits and workshop sites are scattered across more than 2,000 acres of ridge top in these Appalachian foothills. It has been called the "Great Indian Quarry of Ohio." Flint Ridge flint is particularly distinctive for its bright coloration. The flint can be napped into Native American artifacts or can be made into attractive cabochons.

How to get there: Collecting is not allowed in the state park but there is plenty of collecting material in the area. The flint is found in Pennsylvanian Age limestone as nodules are as massive beds. The streams in the area and cuts reveal the flint.

Location #2: Fairborn - Oakes Park

General description: Oakes Park is an abandoned 180 acre rock quarry. The Brassfield formation at this park is unique in that the preservation of organisms and is excellent for fossils of this age. The fossils found in this park include well preserved specimens of crinoids, corals, stromatoporoids, bryozoans, brachiopods, mollusks, trilobites, and several kinds of trace fossils
How to get there: Fairborn is on the east side of Dayton on I 675. Take E Xenia Drive exit 22. The Park is just east of the free way.

Check with park personnel on regulations for collecting fossils. The park allows collecting a reasonable amount of fossils.

Location #3: Fossil Park

General description: The city of SyvaniaSylvania invites visitors to collect 400 Million Year Old Middle Devonian
fossils from an abandoned quarry. The fossils collected are well preserved abundant remains of corals, brachiopods, echinoderms, and trilobites.
How to get there: The Park is on the west side of Centennial Road in Sylvania, Ohio which is Northwest of Toledo.

No digging tools are allowed, The silica shale can be broken with your hands.

Location #4: East Fork State Park



General description: One of the largest Ohio state parks and just 25 miles from Cincinnati. The park permits collecting marine fossils from the Kope and Fairview Formations, and Bellevue Member of the Grant Lake Limestone. The main formation exposed is in the emergency spillway.
How to get there: Elklick Road, Bethel, OH. Twenty five mile east of Cincinnati on Ohio Pike Hwy 222.

Helpful notes to newcomers: This is a great park even if there were absolutely no neat fossils. A 2160 acre lake offers boating, water skiing, a 1200 feet of sand beach, miles of hiking trails, and get away cabins in addition to camping. What are you waiting for.
