One of my favorite Western Agates is Graveyard Point. Has anyone collected at the site recently? I have a great deal on high quality Graveyard. What a weird name for such a beautiful agate. You would think it would be called Autumn Folage Agate or Oregon Showy Plume Agate. Good GP is selling for a great deal for rough and finished pieces.

Hello my precious dirt nerd family! I am finding myself blessed to be headed to the central oregon coast (Beverly Beach and Lincoln City) two weekends in a row in a week or so.
I am just wondering if anyone would like to share their favorite locality in the area, on or off the beach? I have some favorite spots for agates near Cape Meares and I have Tim's DVD and Gem Trails of Oregon so I am <i>aware<i> of these localities, personal stories? I've heard there is pyrite at Otter Rock in clay and we're going to explore the Augite off Hwy 6 on the way in. The hubby is less into fossils than shiny rocks but I love it all! :) Thanks ahead for sharing guys and gals. :)

Years ago a good friend toled me about a beautiful stone. "Such a bitchin color," he said, very excited. "Only in Oregon he added. It's called Holly Blue, and its rare."
I had no reason to doubt his knowledge. Perhaps the story, was just that..a story. Or maybe not, and that will be, Fun in the Sun, for us this summer !

We took a trip over to one of the Paulina sites to look for limb casts. We took the first suggested road, at milepost 44, Camp Creek Road along Highway 380 (Paulina Highway). We drove the nine miles up, suggested by my book "Gem Trails of Oregon" and even my BLM map shows this site (newer map). The BLM map says you will see a small gravel pit, and to just drive past it on the unpaved road it is on. Well, at the entrance of this little road to the site, there is a large had made sign that says "Private property NO trespassing, trespassers will be prosecuted to the FULLEST extent of the law possible". The bold letters are theirs. There is a gate blocking access to this road, although I believe that it is a BLM road. We had a couple of disappointed kids, but proceeded to make an attempt to find another spot, not too far away ,as our day was dwindling by that time. We stopped at the bridge over the creek, and above that was a steep hillside, covered in a "slide" of basalt. In that basalt, we found some agate, browns and reds. Some of it was just to dangerous to try to get on the severely steep slope of pure loose rocks though, but the red was VERY red and solid large chunks. I'll have a picture up soon.
Now we did not go to the Congleton Road site (the second in the book and on the BLM map), so we do not know the status of that site. It was much further down than we wanted to drive (some more with kids itching to get out and find something). Anyone up on it can try it and let us all know. We might try it sometime in the future.

Been collecting Oregon's State Rock for the better half of 20 years and appears I cannot stop. Went so far as purchasing a claim for them near the little town of Harper Oregon last year. We head over there a couple times each year and all are welcomed to come along and join the fun. Been doing well with some eggs weighing into the 100s of pounds. If you are looking for a fun outing, this is it.

Found it finally. Very exciting. Walking along our third spot at the Clackamas River, the spot was at milepost 41, and there it was just sitting there in the water, all by it's lonely self. I now the picture looks not so green, but it is, and lot's of the red spots within. Now we know that there is more up there. I have to believe that the further up there you go, you will find more.

Just found this site. I am looking for new places in Oregon about an hour or 2 from Salem to find Thundereggs agates and geodes. Also if you look at my profile picture you can see a geode. The inside looks like bubbled melted glass. Anybody know anything about it? I have a few other peices as well. Looks to me like there was once crystals maybe it was in a fire got hot and melted.????

I have a question about this. While on the coast (we were at Oceanside, OR, in a cove accessed by a man made pass through cave), I previously stated that we had encountered this really dark green veins within the rocks right along the beach. This rock looked a lot like this, but quite dark, and had the feel of jasper, that "greasy" feel when wet. Could this have been a kind of serpentine? The way this article:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.geohiking.com/serpentine3.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.geohiking.com/serpentine.html&usg=__dEk28xJu3hzkH2lMugKcOOp3rcg=&h=532&w=402&sz=189&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=IA5KeZOOiXdxjM:&tbnh=132&tbnw=100&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dserpentine%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DG describes it, it sure seemed to be...Thanks for the inpuy.

We live close to the Clackamas River and decided to take a drive up to Mt. Hood National Forest, via this route, on a whim. Let me tell you, we had time for only two stops along the river, and it was actually more productive than I would have thought. Along the gravel bar, we immediately found a large chunk of petrified wood sticking out of the enbankment by the river, lots of jasper's, some pretty mottled, but interesting. Then we kept finding all of this green rock, most abraded, but when wet quite green. So we picked it up, liking the color. Son found half of a thunderegg with jasper and opal in it (odd for this side of the mountains I thought) and my daughter found this lightweight rock, which was light green with mostly quartz and in areas quartz crystals sitting upright, intact, but very tiny. Found out the green rock is bloodstone, which excited me, as it is all over up there, and a lot of rocks also with tons of deep reds in it too, but not sure what that is other than a jasper...give it a try up there, we plan to go again and see what else a longer and farther trip up could get us.

I have enjoyed all of the shows and wish there were many more. I loved the program about Oregon sunstones especially and hope to bring my family to do that this fall. One treasure I'd like to see Kirsten seek is our fabulous CHANTRELLE MUSHROOMS. They are plentiful in the fall throughout most of the coast mountain range, and they are some of the finest mushrooms in the world. The fall colors would also be spectacular for the program. It would be a pleasure ...

I have posted these two photos of what we think is petrified wood. My son found a small bit of it peeking out of the creek banks and dug it up. The colors are quite vivid and it appears to have some clearish/bluish agate throughout, and you can see the lines of the tree (thats what we think they are anyways). At first I saw this and thought of the red volcanic rock all over in E. Oregon. Although this is almost plastic like in texture (smooth and somewhat shiny). The backside is rough and gray/black, we thought maybe it was part of the bark? We're amazed every time about the variables in the petrified wood over there. Would love to hear from experienced people on this one.
