Location #1: Swatara State Park

General description: Fossil beds are exposed along the Old State Road and provides a variety of Devonian age (375 million years ago) marine fossils. The fossils can be incredible. Pennsylvania even has a state fossil, the trilobite.
How to get there:
Swatara State Park is in Lebanon and Schuylkill counties, 14 miles north of Lebanon and three miles west of Pine Grove. The park is easily reached from I-81: at Exit 90, Lickdale, take PA 72 north; at Exit 100, take PA 443 west.

Helpful notes to newcomers: The park is not developed but does offer numerous activities including fishing, hiking/biking trails. hunting and boating.

Location #2: Beltzville State Park

General description: Unlike many states, Pennsylvania allows fossil collecting in selected locations in some state parks. Fossils can be found on the shores and in the shallow water along Beltzville lake.
How to get there:
Beltzville is five miles east of Lehighton, just off of US 209. From the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, take Exit 74 and follow the signs to the park.

Location #3: Cornwall Furnace
General description: Cornwall Furnace is a state historic site that featured complete iron manufacturing facility built in 1742. The Park is well worth your time. In addition Magnatite, Chalcopyrite, Pyrite, Garnet, Chrysocolla, Aragonite, Chlorite, Tremolite, Actinolite, Phlogopite, Quartz, Orthoclase, Rhodochrosite, Copper, Hornblende, Diopside, Augite, Serpentine, Prehnite, Heulandite, Gypsum, Natrolite
can be found just east of the Historic Site on HWY 322. "Geological Survey of Pennsylvania"

General description: A popular collecting site for quartz crystals.

General description: One of the best web sites on minerals and fossils to be found in a state. Bar None! The site has a museum, list of collecting sites,clubs in the area, back issues of "Matrix" magazine and much more.

Location #6:National Limestone Co. Quarry, Lime Ridge, Mount Pleasant Mills, Perry Twp., Snyder Co., Pennsylvania

*Mineral clubs will sometimes have field trips to this active quarry, otherwise it is closed to mineral collectors.

Helpful notes to newcomers: The National Limestone Co. quarry is well known for good specimens of wavellite, calcite crystals,and strontianite.
