| Believe it or not collecting power line insulators is a big hobby. Old insulators are valued based upon their rarity and their uniqueness. The glass insulators can be quite attractive. The first system to use insulators were the telegraph lines beginning in the 1840s. The first ceramic insulators were produced in England by the Stiff and Doulton company. | Native American Artifacts found in Mt Fork Arkansas Fourche Maline Tribes 2500 to 1100 BC Every Spring my wife's dad would plow up Native American tools from his garden. These tools varied from axes, toma hawks, arrowheads. digging mauls, knifes etc. The rock for making the tools was found on the property in a small wash. Dark colored Quartzite was heat treated by burying the stone under a fire. The site was ideal for a campground. The Mountain Fork River and a large stream, Mill Creek, intersects at the property. The ancient tribes were the for runners of the Mound Builders who built cities that rivaled the Mayas in Central America. There is a collection of Fourche Maline artifacts at the Noble Museum at the University of Oklahoma. |

Upon my arrival here a few months ago. I noticed a theme here.. and It didn't seem to include other forms of treasures.. We all value different types of treasures and most are radially available to us. Take for instance Saturday morning.. I met this couple throwing away some trash. I also noticed some things simply sticking out the bags.. and asked If I could take a look.. They agreed and went off, leaving me the 6 bags of what they called "trash".
I noticed some old toys. stuffed animals and other odds and ends.. But one thing struck my eye.. In a clear package was four coins about the size of a half dollar but bigger and made of bronze.. First I thought "Olympic Medals". Turns out they are called "Challenge Coins" give to a solder that must had been in their family. Taking the coins inside I did some research.. The coins can be valued at or between $7.00 - $15.00 each depending on the subject matter. I couldn't let this pass.. I had to tell the family who threw out the trash.. I caught up with them the next day.. and handed the coins back to them.. "Did you know these where in the trash?" I asked.. They had no idea and simply said it was all trash to them.. after I told them of the coins value.. they started taking a second look at what they were throwing away. I asked them if they had more items they needed to simply throw away, let me know.. and I'll check over the items and even separate them into piles according to their values if any. With in moments they had set out 4 large boxes.. most contained toys and dolls.. Some of the doll where still in their original boxes and never been opened. after about 30 ins I had the lot separated and organized and asked that they return for the results. One area I knew they could get money right away was some old sports equipment. Gloves, softballs, even some new climbing equipment.. all have value and they were just going to throw this stuff away..

Lets all keep this in mind.. One man's trash is another mans Treasure.. Most of us collect one thing or another.. Thou rock are a great and easy obtainable source for collecting.. I have found that (dare I say it) I have went into other persons trash and found items we all simply throw away.. item that have or may not have been any use to the person throwing it away. As for me The plastic containers are a great way to store and organize my minerals (mainly for the tumbling aspect).
Old pictures, stain glass windows... this list can go on.. Seems the "hip" thing to do now is go green. yet my wife and I have been green for many years. Just goes to show many that we had been hip before there was anything to be hip about. Again yard sales are going to pop up like wild fire this year.. so be prepared... I know my wife and I will. But on a different subject matter.. A few years ago.. I was at the Smithsonian and noticed a pendant. of a carved woman.. I bought it and later learn, that it was a small chip of a 10,000 year old walrus tusk.. hum.. makes one wonder.. So not all treasure needs to be what one can see.. always look beyond what isn't there. and perhaps you'll find something you can treasure. |

I like to collect coins and other types of money items to include pennies, siver coins, military pay certificates, $2 bills, foreign coins and bills, silver and gold rounds or trade tokens, state quarters and the new presidential gold dollars. I was wondering if there is anyone else that likes this type of treasure hunting as well as the rock hounding? I am not talking about metal detecting finds this is all from stores, banks, family, friends and co workers and possible the occasional yard sale.
I don't have a really large collection at this time but I am working on it. I started with just tossing the pennies in my pocket into a coffee can, now I have two full cans and go through them every now and then to find the wheat pennies and any other rare finds that others missed. I then purchased a box wrapped in brown bag at my wifes family reunion action for $26 and when I opened it there where 50 IKE silver dollers in it. Since then I will buy $2 bills from anyone that has them mainly one co-worker that umps and when he gets paid there are normally a few bills that I buy from him. He recently purchased a storage unit that someone had abandoned, and I purchased a 5 cent and 10 cent millitary pay voichers, 2 one troy ounce pure silver rounds, a Ellis Island silver proof set half dollar and 1 dollar in case a $2 bill, a Haiti bill, a Canary Island bill and a centinial coin set in case. This is only some of my purchases or finds. Dave
