I did a bit of research.. and may have the answer to your dark rock issue.. One thing is clear.. it would be great to get a closer look at the minerals.. Cleaning them the a soft tooth brush and (I prefer to use Dawn foam) soaping them up in warm water.. will loosen any dried on residue. But just at a glance.. I would have to say they appear to be Hematite. Do you find this valuable?
