I'm new to this site and I havn't found any pics of Roxbury Garnets here so I thought I'd put one up. They 're not gemmy but interesting. They were mined for sandpaper years ago.

Welcome to the wiki Stonebuster. Nice Smokey Quartz. Why don't you add to your profile, and tell us a little about yourself ? While you're at it, Go to the National Directories page, and add your collecting knowledge to the Ct. page. We all try to share what we know with each other. It makes us the best rockhounding site on the internet.Don 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

First of all, thank you all for the warm welcome. I am floundering alittle trying to learn how to navigate the site. I live 20 minutes from Roxbury so I go there collecting large Almandine garnets when I get cabin fever. I used to collect beautiful smoky quartz crystals from an abanded quarry on hydrolic company propery that is now off limits and strictly enforced. Don't ask me how I know. I collected there for 15 years before it became a homeland securities issue. I collect in the Old Mine Park area of Trumbull and have mined some nice purple cubes of flourite up to one inch on calcite crystals. There are some great trap rock quarries in our area, but permission is very hard to get. There are also some great places for beryl in Ct. as well as green tourmaline, I'm a rock blaster so I occassionally find something worthwhile at work.

Hi Stonebuster. Explain trap rock to me. I read a little about it in New Jersey i believe. Someone there started a page for it on the wiki, but never really added anything.~Zeke Do you find this valuable? |

The trap rock quarries I'm referring to are basalt. Minerals such as prehnite, calcite, amethyst, apophlolite and many more occur in pockets, vugs , or geodes. New Jersey has some great and similar occurances. Please be advised, although I enjoy collecting , I am not by any means an expert. I come to these sites out of interest and to learn.
