The green colored opal from that locality falls apart more readily (crazes) than the other colors ... I've heard this is due to a slight radioactive content, but haven't tested it myself. But since most of it crazes anyway, not a good lapidary material. The pea soup green color is especially bad ... which is why there are usually shards of that all over the pit floor.

THANKS FOR THE INFO. WE KNEW THE GREEN WAS NOT STABLE,BUT IT WAS JUST A NEET PIECE SO WE KEPT IT AS A SPECIMEN. FOUND A BIG RED NODULE THAT OUR SAW WON'T CUT AS IT IS REAL HARD AND WE HAD A CHEEP BLADE IN IT. GOING TO SEE IF WE CAN FIND A FRIEND TO FINISH THE CUT. WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW THAT TURNS OUT.
