Indiana Limestone
The beige tint of this limestone is due to the iron oxide present in the sediments when they were deposited. Bob will be proud of me, because I used my 3 lb. hammer to whack this sucker open! LOL Eric

Indiana road sign
I only saw one person collecting along roadcuts and none on Highway 37. This sign was on Highway 1. I noticed it on my way out.

8-mile hike - out in the boonies
Lots of farmland in Indiana to explore. This was a part of my 8 mile hike to 1) explore the terrain and 2) get back in top physical condition.

Exploring the terrain
Believe it or not, you can find a lot of stuff in Indiana farmland. And if you ask the farm owners' permission, they're usually happy to let you explore their land and remove, what to them, are unwanted rocks, eroded out of the gacial till.

Treasure hunting vacation...
Indiana - geodes, Michigan - Petoskey/Favosite stones, agates and lots of fossils. Kentucky - geodes, calcite crystals. Visit my profile and order the books I've listed from your local library. They have good info and some have maps.
Have a good vacation Pam

Anywhere in Illinois
I think also if you contact rock clubs in the area where you are going, you will find most people are friendly and helpful. A member of my rock club did this during a vacation to KY last spring break. They brought back enough geodes the weight collapsed their car-top carrier (who carries rocks on the roof of their car?)
If you are travelling through Indiana, be aware the authorities are ticketing rock hounds who are collecting in roadcuts. Pam
