  • Treasure Hunting It seams their are a alot of places to go hunting for treasures but you keep on giving re-runs of the same shows. For example up in the mountains of Colorado next to the town of Cripple Creek their is another town called Victor. This town was burnt to the grown and rebuilt back in the cowboys and indian times. Everthing that was burt in this town was put in one area, that area is now a dump site for the town but the old area of the dump site is known only to a few including the worker at the dump site, if you get my drift. I have seen people return with the old jugs and bottles with different colores from this site. Another place to go after a storm is the treasure coast of Florida. How about the Diamond State Park in Arkansas, or safire and ruby hunting in Montana and Noth Carolina. How about gold hunting in Georgia or North Carolina, or the topaz in Texas. It seems that there are far more places to go.

  • Help! Geology programs in peril Hi all,

Thought many of you would be interested in some rather disturbing events that have been/are going on with university geology programs. In the last year, several well-respected university geology departments have close, including those at SUNY-Albany and the University of Connecticut (I think there are others as well that I am forgetting). This is part of an ongoing pattern where earth science is either deemed unnecessary for a university, or were it is demoted by putting a handful of geologists in a potpourri department. The latest manifestation of this is happening in FLorida, where the geology programs at the two most prominent state universities (Florida State and the University of Florida) are in serious peril. I here that the department at FSU may be eliminated, and the one at UF is facing such severe cuts that it will be crippled. You can read more about it at:

    http://www.flascience.org/wp/?p=964

Given the strong interest of people on this board in geology and related topics, hopefully some of you (especially those living in FLorida) will write to the president, provost, and dean (addresses given on the URL above) or contact your legislators reminding them of the importance of geologic education.

    thanks

    Phil

  • Rose Creek Mine My wife and I stopped here with my parents en route to visit her parents in Florida. We only stayed about two hours and came away with about twenty nice specimens each including ruby, sapphire, moonstone, topaz, amethyst, rhodolite garnet, and even a couple tiny emerald shards. We didn't see anyone using the salted buckets, but we came away pretty psyched.

On the way back from Florida we decided to stop again and were glad we had the chance. We didn't find as much, but a teenage girl upstream of me on the sluice got one of the "Mega" salted buckets. There was so much stuff in that bucket of hers that I was finding stuff in the sluice. I tried giving it back but she didn't want it. I might try one of those next time for amusement.

I will say that we're already planning how to get back to Franklin, NC. We did try to find the $30 a day Mason Mine which is supposedly near Rose Creek but we couldn't find it. I want to try some of the other mines, too. That said, we'll probably at least stop by Rose Creek Mine because we had a good time and it was pretty laid back and fun.

  • Franklin, N.C. Gem Mining
"Thanks again! :-) Actually drove by Franklin today on our way up today-- if it hadn't been later in the afternoon and if we hadn't had to go so far still, definitely would have stopped for a few buckets. ;-) Ah well, guess we'll have to wait for the return trip for the mining...

I'll have to look into what rockhounding possibilities may exist in the area of Quebec we go to."
I took time to read your web site , it is a great site. Have you collected some of the fantastic sites in Florida? Such sites as the fossil agatized corals, great fossil sites (some of the best in the country) . I love the big springs in Florida and the clean clear rivers the springs generate. There is good collecting in the streams. I will post a couple of pictures of Florida specimens. One is a chalcedony fossil Tampa Bay coral with that looks like a golden cornacopia and the other is great piece of yellow moss agate that weighs several pounds. You live in a wonderful state to be a rockhound, I hope you will post some information about Florida inaddition to what is already on the National Directory.

  • CRNW Hey,
My brother-in-law is coming up from Boise tonight. (same guy who took 3 months to drive from Florida to Boise hop-scotching from one "Cash and Treasures" site to the next. He had over 10,000 miles on his car before he arrived in Boise!) Anyway, we've been patiently waiting to search for Star Garnets together. Emerald Creek is opening tomorrow for 1 day before they close for their "regular days off" on Wed/Thurs. I'll post pictures of our day... I'll also check out the campground while I'm there. Stay tuned!
    I'm excited!! ;-)

  • Anywhere in Illinois Thanks. Yes Keokuk is a good place and I have been to the Mazon but didn't have much luck. Will try again though. If you think of any other or from here to Florida let me know. I did go to southern Ill last spring but it was after they had the 100 mile an hour winds and there was so much destruction you could not get most places.

  • Articles for Rock and Gem
"I know sometimes it appears that it is a PNW wiki site. But we still have participation from all across the country and world for that matter. Us WA folks must be a little more outgoing with the gift of gab. But thanks to people like Bill and others there are hunt sites listed in every state in the nation (I think - I haven't checked them all, but I know most if not all are represented) but the people just don't connect like we doo. I sure wish they would. The friendships and fun is well worth any effort.

Thanks to this wiki I have personally met some outstanding people, all I consider good friends, and have gone on some great digs with them. I look forward to meeting more of the Westsiders next spring or summer. I may have to try to find some agates. lol Frankly, there isn't anyone on this wiki I wouldn't mind meeting sometime and going on digs with. I just wish I could make it happen.

Hope you guys who got out today had a successful outing and god some great goodies. I look forward to your reports and pics.

    Paul

    "
I have a great time on the Wiki. I just wish I were not 1800 miles away from you PNW folks. I would digging and picking with the whole troop. Everyone has been so helpful and downright fun. Paul, you still need to facet my kidney agate. I have made some great friends from not only PNW but Argentina, Israel, Florida, NC, AZ, MI, AL and points all over the compass. I hope to plan a trip out your way and you all are welcome to come my way

  • Hellection 2008 Thank you; that's the way I believe and live. My kids were big into sports - football, wresting, baseball-you name it. David wrestled at Oklahoma State. We always had a house full of teenagers from the teams along with their friends, To that generation race was unimportant. David talked to me on the phone this morning and he had no real understanding of where the nation had come from. Last night Obama carried the capital of the old Confederacy ( Virginia) along with the deep Dixie states of North Carolina, and Florida. The race was close in Georgia. Where I live has as great a diversity as any where in the country. We had an 80% turn out in the county and the majority voted their views and not race. Where McCain had 20 point leads were in the far west (Montana, Idaho. Utah, Arizona, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska , and Wyoming which had 2 out of three votes for McCain. I do not think with that Westerners voted for race but more for their conservative values. Western Arkansas is as much western as it is southern. There are mountains ,cattle ranches, elk hunts, Texas style Bar B Que and the capital of the Cherokee nation in Oklahoma is forty mile from here. It a great place to live as is the Great State of Washington.

  • Fairburn Agates 1:47 P.M., 1 degree above with minus 22 wind chill. That white global warming is everywhere. I wish Al Gore would take it back. Folks in Florida complaining about 44 degree weather. Heck, thats tee shirt weather. Cabin fever is starting to set in. Can't wait to get out in the field
hunting down that next agate. I'd go out in my shop to cut some of that Brazilian stuff, but I broke the drive belt on my slab saw last night. The
roads are drifted shut. Can't get to town for a new belt. Cabin fever is getting me. Argh! I think I'm going crazy.
