  • good spots in michigan
"I am starting metal detecting but i don't know where to find good spots and my detecter is really old where can i find a great cheap metal detector"
That is a very good question. You may try local pawn shops, watch Craig's list, eBay, estate and garage sales to mention a few. Just got to be lucky and at the right place at the right time.

I see you posts below about sea glass. Sure there will be sea glass - well lake glass in the shores of the big lakes. But there needs to be a lot of wave action to produce the real good looking rounded, frosted glass.

For places to rockhound and explore in MI, on the left side menu there is the national directory. There you can pick the state you are interested in and see what dig or hunting sites are listed. Of course if you know any yourself, please feel free to add them as well. Here is the list to the national directory, MI to make it a little easier for you.

I see you are new to the wiki, welcome! I hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us rocker's and treasure hunters do.

    Hope this helps. :-)

  • Good Hunting Places Around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc? My husband and I would like to plan our first "treasure hunting" trip this summer and are looking for recommendations. We would like to stay within 10 hours/two states of Eastern MN. We are willing to try anything, but are not willing to pay lots for the experience. Does anyone have any ideas for us? We have gone agate hunting, but we are open to new agate sites as well. Thank you for any direction!

  • Treasure hunting vacation... Indiana - geodes, Michigan - Petoskey/Favosite stones, agates and lots of fossils. Kentucky - geodes, calcite crystals. Visit my profile and order the books I've listed from your local library. They have good info and some have maps.

    Have a good vacation

  • Michiganders? Does everyone on this forum live in Washington? :) No offense, it sounds like you have a lot of fun. It seems all the threads point to the the Southeast or West though. I could use a "rock pickin' partner" here in West Michigan.

  • Labels on specimens -
"How do you know they were mislabeled? Was the seller knowledgeable? Did the mislabeled location affect the price? I would let him know.
    Bill"
Location generally does affects the price. A Fairburn agate has a much higher price than a common Brazilian agate. Fluorite from Illinois brings a much higher price than Fluorite from China. An Arkansas saw diamond brings far more than an African diamond for the same quality and size. By the way an Arkansas diamond is generally worth more if left uncut. Since I have family up your way we will need to get together to hunt treasures in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana.

  • Meteor Showers Last winter my folks wintered in Green Valley, AZ. My dad has a metal detector and wanted badly to find a piece of meteor. He didn't. How do you know a meteor when you see it?

Light pollution. It's becoming a problem when I look towards the east. If I can look to the west, I'm looking out over Lake Michigan and can see plenty of stars.

  • Our rock collections cbh45,

Very nice pictures, I especially like the green tektite. I enjoy reading the extras that you've posted. It helps those of us enlightened. Speaking of enlightened, we also gather fulgerites here in Michigan. We have very large sand dunes on Lake Michigan. When storms come across the lake the lightning strikes the dunes. My fulgerites are much smaller than yours. None of mine are hollow.

  • Looking for a rock hunting partner I also am looking for a rock hunting partner. I have been planning a trip to Dugway, Utah over the last couple of days. I am from Michigan and am following the feeling in my gut to find crystals and gems. I am particularly facinated with the geodes that can be found in Dugway.. I am also learning there are some other great places near by too. I am planning this trip alone, and am slightly worried about trekking alone out there. If you are interested in meeting up for a day or two to check things out, that would be fantastic. I was very happy to stubble on your post. I was thinking about leaving in about a week or less. I will be stopping in Put in Bay, Ohio to look at the Crystal Cave.
    Hope this works out!
    Peace and love,
    Julie
