  • treasue hunting in kansas near bonner springs To tell you the truth, I am not real familiar with Kansas
as far as Treasure Hunting goes, but I do know a few
interesting Tid-Bits of information that might interest
    you and your kids.

First.....the western part of the state tends to turn into rolling
canyon like terrain......an ideal type of terrain to investigate for
Rock Hounding and Metal Detecting. Gold, Meteorites, Arrow
Heads and Bison Skeletal remains can be found in these areas.
I also hear that Opal is pretty prevelant in the state.

Also......you will notice that a large portion of the state is flat,
except the western region near the western Kansas / Colorado
state line.....it make sense to me that if any Gold or any other
precious metals or minerals were to be found, just like in the
mountains of Colorado, that these areas would be a good
place to start. I would do a bit of research first though to make
sure you don't get busted working someone else's claim
though......look for public sites in and around that region.

The U.S. National Geological Survey has a website that
has information regarding Gold and Mineral mining claims
up to 2004 which covers the entire Continental United States.
And you can use it to conduct your reseach for free.

    Happy Hunting

And I hope you and your kids have a blast.

  • Cool Meteorite Site I started a treasure page for meteorites. Then maybe we can get some locations (think Kansas). I don't believe there's anything in Kansas. All the easier to find meteorites!

"Maybe you don't have lawns, but the rockhounding is a lot better than Eastern South Dakota. I'd trade the lawn any day.
    Don"
My gosh, eastern South Dakota - sorry to hear that. Never been to eastern South Dakota. Spent alot of time in western South Dakota, but they are two different worlds I would guess.

Although you just never know what you might find. I worked on a group of kimberlites and lamproites (both hosts for diamond deposits) in northeastern Kansas. They were hidden under several cow ponds.

  • Bill, that was a great article in R and G
"I had to mention South Dakota. How could it be left out? I just got back from San Antonio. I was talking to a number of University leaders on Green building. I was itching to go fossil collecting. That part of Texas is well know for fossils. I did get down to the Alamo and the River Walk. Great food- 85 degrees - flowers in bloom. San Antonio is one of those unique places that one can visit. There are Quarry operations from San Antonia to Austin, - The Limestone is golden colored and covered with marine fossils so it is highly prized for building stone, "
I know that area is really nice, right after I got my Dodge Ram Hemi, our paster and I hauled a pickup load and pulled a trailer loaded with belongings down there for a old lady who had no way of getting her stuff down there. The sad thing is I never got time to look around after driving stright down there and unloading and stopping in Kansas and loading the trailer up and heading back home. But the time spent with a paster can be worth more than the best gems. db
