Good Hunting Places Around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc?
My husband and I would like to plan our first "treasure hunting" trip this summer and are looking for recommendations. We would like to stay within 10 hours/two states of Eastern MN. We are willing to try anything, but are not willing to pay lots for the experience. Does anyone have any ideas for us? We have gone agate hunting, but we are open to new agate sites as well. Thank you for any direction!

family friendly hunting
"I'm looking for family friendly sites to do a little rock hounding with our 5 year old duaghter. We live in Minneasota but have car trips planned for Oklahoma City and Black Hills/Badlands this summer. She absolutely loved our trip to ThunderBay for Amethyst last summer. Welcome to this wiki, amoung the best Family Friendly sites to rockhound on. I have never been to Minnesota but you've never been to Washington either have ya? Would be happy to send you your very own "Rockhound Washington " box containing an abundance of Washingtons treasures which include amoung other things;agates,petrified wood,fossils,jasper etc.......................See you don't have to travel to Washington to rock hunt - :) Very cost effective and almost as exciting as a field discovery.

Looking for a rock hunting partner
I am coming to SD to ROCK HUNT from minnesota. DB do you still have your store in Rapid city? And since your word is good................. i bet I can pick up my agate there (fairburn that is). Will I be able to get some clues as to where to hunt agates and jasper in the western SD area? :) :)

Anyone Hunt Diamonds In Wyoming?
"Turns out we were filming very close to there chasing diamonds. Sybil Creek drainage (may be the same drainage, but we would have been to the area on the right (another lamprolite area). I saw Hausel at the geology station at the University, but didn't know who he was at the time." I hear that geologist from a Canadian mining company are looking for pipes in not only Wyoming but also Minnesota. I have been to the Arkansas diamond mine on several occassions. There are several lamprolite pipes in the area. At one time the State of Arkansas considered selling the mine to Canadian investors. The public out cry was such that Bill Clinton ,who was the governor, backed away from the deal. Extensive boring was conducted and the conclusion was that the mine did not have a high enough percentage of gem grade diamonds. I must admit that I go there not to hunt diamonds but to find cutting material (multicolored jasper and lace agate" If you go for diamonds you must be focused on the work at hand. It takes some real digging, hauling, washing and inspecting to find a diamond. There is a pay off for the committed miner. A friend of mine Jim Archer made a living mining diamonds. He worked half a day at the mine and a half a day on his front porch looking through the gravel. The most attractive diamond I saw at the mine was one of Jims. It was a lovely shade of green.

Help! Geology programs in peril
Yes I am aware of the trend and it is a shame. It is part of a trend to move industry over seas. I was a mining engineer for a number of years. Mines have been closed all across our nation. Not because there is no longer any ore but because labor is cheaper overseas and laws are more relaxed concerning safe mining practices and environmental laws. Arizona is seeing the end of copper mining. Missouri and Oklahoma is loosing the lead and zinc industry. The great Masabi Range of Minnesota is becoming a memory. The universities are responding to supply and demand - sad to say. No mines - why train geologist. I had to work overseas to stay in the mining industry - so did Bob. The trend effects not only mining but most of America's industries, steel, automobiles, electronic, clothing, petroleum. America is a debtor nation that produces very little but imports vast amounts of foreign goods. No wonder unemployment is climbing.

I get mine from minnesota to make the ceremony pipes with. I got a piece of Pink jade from tim and sharon to make a pipe for a lady who beat cancer and is going to start learning ceremonies this year. I had heard that some where over ther there was supposed to be deposit but had never looked for it.

i purchased the 13 oz from a woman on ebay who says she finds them alll over where she lives. she was going to get more for me, and it's been 6 months and i think something serious happened like a divorce or something. she intimated as much when i last heard from her.
i am a computer idiot. i can take pictures, then my husband can down load them into the computer for me. but after that, i don't know how to post the pictures after that. people have tried.......
from what's on sale on e-bay now, i got these at bargain basement prices!! 5 bucks for 13 oz!!!
i wish i could help. i'm disabled and can no longer work. the hunting i do has to be things that are easily obtainable. i can't hike or even walk too far. my husband made me a "rock scooper" out of an ice fishing tool. my main, beloved hobby of less than 1 years duration is finding rocks anywhere, coming home and tumbling them. my fave???? lake superior agate. we went hunting for them while we were in northeastern minnesota. we found agates--at agate city in two harbors. i paid between 8 and 12 bucks a pound for the lake superior agates!
i have so much to tumble scaattered in different places in this house! rocks and stones found on lake shores, along rivers, anywhere there are rocks!!

"lmao! I gotta quit licking them dang rocks I guess I guess...." Heck, how else do ya see them pretty bands if ya don't lick the agates?? I mean, the ones that I find in an area where a dog mighta pooped, that gets water.
Dig this (oops), this past summer, Dave and I decided to go Lake Superior Agate hunting in Minnesota, and went to the LSA capital of the world, Moose Lake, Mn. I'd been told by multiple people, to go to this one pit. Over and over, the same pit mentioned. So, we check in with the chamber of commerce, then go to the pit. NO TRESPASSING!!!!! So what did we do?? We went in to the on site office, told the woman we drove over 900 miles to go to this pit. It was a Friday and closing time, so she shut her eyes, turned her head and told us-go, go, go with God. And we did. Did we find THE agate?? Heck no. Did we find any agates? yes, the largest was about lima bean size. Once you know the reddish brown transluscent stone, the silky feel of the agate itself. Heaven. I was just having the time of my life digging in a 10 ft high pile!!!! Then y'all know the tick story at the end of the vacation. The above was at the beginning.......

I guess I meant to say that Dave and I will obey all no trespassing signs. This one just so happened to have someone on site. That's the only reason we went in.
