Peacock Mine in Nevada
I'd be interested in hearing from someone who's been to the Peacock mine, or other black opal mines in northern Nevada. A few years ago the show The Best Places to Search For Cash & Treasure (saw this show again today) gave a good account of the site and it seems like one of the best places to be able to dig in virgin material for these extremely valuable gemstones. Thanks.

Royston Mine turquoise info...
I remember seeing the Travel Channel show where they ended up mining for turquoise in Nevada. Kirsten said it was $50.00 a day and they provided the tools. But when I called, the fee was $100.00 per person to mine out there. Is there anyone that knows if the rates go up certain times of the year? I called to go now for the Summer. When the travel Channel went they were in December.

A Mountain Of Opals
"A Mountain Of Opals
I may have posted this in a low-resolution version earlier: my apologies if I did as it was extremely poor visually. Youtube has changed recently and posts only the low-res version on startup, and I didn't catch that change -- under "Views" hit high resolution and you'll have the movie as uploaded.
The very best of luck to you all in chasing your dreams!
MM" Forgot to say I found them using the technique(s - Finding Gold VII has more) described all through the top of Nevada as well, so it is certainly not site specific. Good luck!

Dugway Geodes
Someone had a thread about visiting Dugway and they found a lot of geodes. I would appreciate seeing that one again, whoever made it. I will be stopping there next month on my way back from Oregon and Nevada for opals. Thanks

Opal Page
This looks great! WOW it is some beautiful material. Just need more money to go play moe! lol
The only suggestion I may have is to size the picture down bit.. I think that will shrink the discription - verbage a little. Maybe it is just my screen, but I had to scoll accross the page to read the full description. The right side was just slightly off my screen.
But I think it looks great and reads very well.

anyone know any places close to las vegas
Go to the Nevada State website and check out any online geological maps there. I have found when dabbling in foriegn areas, the best way to start is maps. Once you get an idea for the "layers" , (most of the area north of Vegas is sedimentary), you have a place to begin. There are several Cambrian layers north of Vegas that have produced rare and not so rare Trilobites. Again, do an online search for "trilobites, vegas, southern Nevada" and start there. Once you familiarize yourself with the terminology, ( sometimes I think they name species so that the rest of us can feel illiterate), find the lenses the Trilobites are in and you can begin. As a side note, over many years of hunting treasures of all sorts, I have found that nothing can out-do a good walk. Seems we want to be able to drive up, get out, look down, pick up the treasure, and head back to town! Keep an eye out for Rattlesnakes, Scorpions, and other less than happy to see you indigenous folk. Plenty of water, well mantained vehicle, good note book, good pair of hiking shoes, a backpack if you are fortunate enough to get enough to fill one, and plenty of good old fashioned determination! GOOD LUCK!

Two Weeks off
Howdy all!
New to site.
I find myself with 2 glorious weeks off and want to do some serious collecting.
I live in North Bend Wa and am planning a road trip thru Oregon on my way to Virign Valley Nevada.
I know areas in WA to collect but not of any in Oregon. I would like to collect thunder eggs and obsidian as I go thru OR. Can anyone here point me to some collecting spots? Would be glad to meet up with any fellow collectors. Gold would be fun too.
Return trip I am thinking of swinging thru Idaho and then coming back across eastern WA. Are there any places to collect in Idaho?
What about fossils- any places to collect in these areas?
I want to thank everyone in advance. And again, if any has the free time and would like to meet up for a day fun in the dirt let me know!!
Have an excellent Day!!!

first time to go gem mining
"Wow, that sounds like an awesome hunting locale.
Aaron" I do wish I could be on that trip with NanseeDawson, but I have to work and can't travel right now. I am going to a Renaissance Faire near where I live a week from this Saturday. I might see some interesting jewelry or gem stones there. There are two trips I want to take to hunt for rocks and minerals. One is to Nevada City, Ca., for a ghost book signing event. I thinking about checking out the surrounding area for quartz, obsidian, maybe some common opal. I'm not purposely looking for gold, but it would be incredibly lucky if I found some. Never say never, I repeat to myself, when rock hunting. The other bigger trip is to look for blue opal in Owyhee Valley in Oregon. Has anybody been there before to hunt for blue opal?

Public access to waterways
Hey all, I know the laws in Oregon and Washington about waterway rights (as an Oregonian, it irritates me that you can "own" a creek and block public access). Anywho, does anyone here know what the laws are in Nevada? I bought the book by Mitchell on Nevada gemstone hunting, and noticed that there are two creeks leaving the Virgin Valley area, and thought although the Rainbow Ridge opal tailing cost was not extreme, but with four of us, it might be more than what we should spend. So, my thought was, go with the idea of just rock hunting (in better weather of course) but stay in the nearby campground and scout the stream or BLM lands for opals ourselves, and just see what we could find. It is the stream one that concerns me. If we were near the mine, but not on their property, in a public place, do they have rights to that, or is it open to public access? We don't want to be violating some laws, or peoples mistrust of us (although I realize that the tailing's would be a much more sure thing, my husband would faint at the prospect of paying that, and I know in the Nevada sun, he would not do it).

National Petrified Forrest in AZ
"now the mystery of the bent beak woodpecker has been solved...lol Great shots of the wood and landscape but where are the shots with the family?? Don't tell me you didn't get any. Man you should be horse whipped. Tom " Actually it was a trip all by myself.. I was driving home from a software installation in Abilene Texas via Arizona and Nevada ;) With my job i get to go all over the place and either watch software work, or fix broken software, so since I had the oppertunity to drive on the company dime how could i pass that up .. ;-) I cant suggest enough that you both get down there in your life at least once.. it is the most amazing place my words cant describe ..

Any hunting fun in Utah?
If you visit the Division of Wildlife Resources in Salt Lake City Utah they have many book on things you can find in Utah. They have a book there that will tell you what you can find in the different counties, what mountain range it is in, wether it is BLM land or not, what kind of vehicle you will need, and directions on how to get there. They also have books for Idaho and Wyoming and I think Nevada and Colorado. Hope this is helpful.

Turquoise Info from a Turquoise Miner, Cutter and Jewelr
Hello all,
We (http://www.durangosilver.com) have been in the business since the 60s and have specialized in American Turquoise. We are partners in several Turquoise mines in Nevada. We also mine Highgrade Silver Ore out of Silverton, Colorado.
I have added a lot of information to this page about turquoise. I have building an online turquoise museum for 8+ years now. Many, many people have stole my information and added it to their site. I do not care as I put it out there for the public to learn and be better educated.
I hope all enjoy what I have contributed.

Virgin Valley Opals
I'm late to the discussion. As much as I really want to go to Nevada for some of the incredible opals there, it is REALLY out of my families price range, even the tailings (there are four of us). So, what would be an alternative we could afford and be at least hopeful to find something?

Thanks, I will check them out next time I am down in that area.
I am an entrepreneur looking for ways to put the start-up capital together to put a new type of Alternative Energy based Motor Company together. I have designed a new type of drive train power plant that will run without gasoline or fuel and I am wanting to have it built and patented for a variety of uses in several different industries besides the Auto Industry alone. But banks and lenders haven't been very cooperative because I have found that they all leverage their quarterly earnings by investing in the petroleum industry in one form or another. This is why Alternative Energy based companies have been slow to enter the open markets with their product lines.
I am thinking about going on an eploritory tour of all these places featured on Cash and Treasure and other similar locations to see just how much net worth in Treasure I can assemble over a 5 or 10 year period. Selling off a portion to live on during that time. Especially gold prospecting in Arizona and Nevada.
How much could a guy find if he did it full time and made a living at it for a while as a drifter or Greyhound bus patron traveling to these different locations to try his luck?
It sounds like an interesting adventure, and potentially a lucrative one at that. I am thinking about doing it.

TOM
Sorry to hear about your recent issues, we will be praying for you. Just got back from Juniper ridge opal mine in Oregon, got overr 10# of fire opal, real beautyfull. Also got some sunstones about 1-1/2 # also pet. wood in Nevada. Went to the Dugway geode mine, picked up lots of small pieces until I found the new digs then I got some nice pieces some about 8# no whole ones because I did not dig. Did not find the place the man from North Carolina showed the pictures of the wall with the pieces of geode sticking out. Did not spend a lot of time there because I was a little scared being 74 yrs. old and all by myself, almost thought I was lost when I was leaving, couldn't find the Pony Express Road, but my compass reading was right and I got out. Also found the wonderstone place and got a lot of them. Thanks, Opalman
