Metal detecing South Dakota
Does anyone know the laws in respect to metal detecting for gold in South Dakota?
Lots of old abandoned farms, old one room school houses and town gathering places to be detected in North East S.D. I'd like to hook up with a few like minded folks, to check a few of them out. Don

Nevada's Peacock Mine
Opalman, sorry you didn't find any black opal but that piece of petrified wood sounds interesting. Hope you have better luck at the Juniper Ridge Mine. I've looked them up as well and they say to prepare for heavy rock breaking! They refer to their clear gems as 'fire opal' which is the term used for years to describe the opals from Australia. Hope you gave a very rewarding trip and let me know how you made out.
Once the dry weather arrives in north-central California (I'm in Watsonville) I'm planning a day trip to the California State Gem Mine near Coalinga to hunt for benitiote, the state gem of California. This is the only location in the world for gem quality samples to be found, so far and it's a couple of hours from me. Here's the website if you want to have a look at it: www.calstategemmine.com
Cheers, Dave

What is your A #1 best rock hunting place in the southwest?
"Welcome to the Wiki!
I definitely think Western Montana might be affordable and is a great locale in terms of rocking, as it is close to Canada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, Nebraska. Western Washington is a beautiful place but no place to live on a fixed income.
Thanks,
Aaron" Hey Aaron, you forgot North and South Dakota. Lots to be found in the Black Hills and National Grasslands of South Dakota, and petrified wood all over both states. Lots of fossils too. Don

Travel Ideas
"I've been blessed this year with some left over airline credit from my work that i must book before the end of October. (about $650)
I am looking for ideas for cool or early spring winter rock hunting trips ..I want to go somewhere new and try something ive never done before.. something really cool! :-)
Anyone have suggestions?
Anywhere but the PacNW as i live here and flying would be a waste ;-)
-Jake " Go to Hot Springs National Park , Arkansas. You will find the nations finest crystal mines where you can take home specimens worth hundreds of dollars. You can dig for really rare gems and specimens 12 miles from Hot Springs at Magnet Cove. There are Novaculite ridges where colorful cutting and napping material can be found. It is a short hour and fifteen minute drive to the diamond mine where if you are lucky you can go away rich. If not you can find lots of lace agate and colorful jaspers in the mine. A short drive west puts you in Mt Ida (35 miles) which has a number of working quartz mines and a rare Wavelite quarry. All that and a great tourist destination with attractions for the whole family. Every thing from hiking, fishing (three great lakes), top rate horse racing track, theme parks, museums, fine dinning, and a world class spa thrown in for good measure. You can stray in a 1890s hotel, new resorts or camp in a number of first class parks. When you get ready to ship your treasure home, you can send 70 pounds priority mail for $7.50. That's how I shipped Tom the last bunch of goodies. Check out what I posted for Arkansas on the National Directory. Most of the sights are near Hot Springs.
Second choice is the Black Hills of South Dakota or North Carolina. Bill

"I down loaded chrome. It is 10 times faster than IE Thanks Bill" Just got that chrome thingy on mine too after reading you guys and it is a heck of a lot better. that is one of the col things of theis site. we learn about rocks and minerals and wood and lapidary arts and all kinds of tips and tricks and so much more. we help each other learn these dang computor thingies and how to improve our selves on them. we learn about each other and our lives and make great friends. I dont think there is a state now that I can't find a rocker in from this site. I hope when I go to Bear butte to be able to meet a few on the trip. Will be going through Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, and maybe North Dakota. tom

Greetings from Oklahoma City
I will post some pics this afternoon. I have a fossil collection but I don't mention it much on the WIKI. There is not much interest in fossils on the site. I have donated some nice fossils to Universities. Billie ANN found a prehistoric camel skull on an ancient white sand beach. It was a Miocene camel that died during a period of higher sea levels. We might have found the whole skeleton if we had dug the site. The site was in south just north of Princeton, Arkansas. Most of my collection is marine fossils. The South Dakota guys really have some of the best fossil collecting in the world. What about Washington. I know Andy added a site which had information about a museum that allowed some collecting of fossils at the park. I believe the site is the Stonerose Interpretive Center.

Looking for a rock hunting partner
It's a pitty that I don't still live in So. Cal. I moved from Riverside to South Dakota about 16 years ago. I could have shown you all of the best rockhounding places in So. Cal. Good luck finding a hounding partner. I'm sure someone on here would like to link up for a trip to Utah.

Fairburn Agates
"I wish I knew people in South Dakota. South Dakota is one of my favorite states I've ever visited in the USA. I still remember entering SD coming from St Louis, it was like another world. More wildlife then I have ever seen in any other state in the US. Not to mention all the large mammal road kill. The SD fishing is amazing as well. There are some seriously huge fresh water fish in South Dakota, and some very predatory fish as well. I loved Custard State Park, and Mount Rushmore as well:)
Thanks,
Aaron" Hey retiredoldfogee, I'm one of those too. Been retired for about 7 years now. I moved to Aberdeen, S.D. back in 96. The large mammal road kill is ok, as long as your car didn't kill it. Plays hell with the body work. The Walleye is great eatin, as is the venison. Here in the north east the rockhounding leaves a lot to be desired though. Come back and see more of the state when you can. South Dakota is a lot more than just the Black Hills, and the road kill.

Petrified Wood
"You guys have really nice wood in SD. What is the name of the museum on the interstate coming into Rapid City. I have collected some large limbs of wood from South Dakota on a bluff above the Cheyenne River, . Bill" Coming into Rapid City from the East? The visitors center sets on the north side and there is a Station on the left that is called the Call of the Wild a free museum. Ya my wife says I-90 exit 61. You know I'm thinking that we have as much wood as any state except North Dakota. Your right Bill the Cheyenne River is one of the best places to find Petrified Wood. Anyone can find a pail full in a few hrs almost anywhere along it. DB

Articles for Rock and Gem
Been talking with Bill.
I may be holding a vision quest camp down at Bear Butte in South Dakota this spring. Probably some time in May. Bill is wanting to come up and after the camp is over we want to get in some rockhounding in that area. Some fairburn agates and pet wood and other things. So if you want a road trip maybe you and jeff could swing it. Tom

Hellection 2008
Thank you; that's the way I believe and live. My kids were big into sports - football, wresting, baseball-you name it. David wrestled at Oklahoma State. We always had a house full of teenagers from the teams along with their friends, To that generation race was unimportant. David talked to me on the phone this morning and he had no real understanding of where the nation had come from. Last night Obama carried the capital of the old Confederacy ( Virginia) along with the deep Dixie states of North Carolina, and Florida. The race was close in Georgia. Where I live has as great a diversity as any where in the country. We had an 80% turn out in the county and the majority voted their views and not race. Where McCain had 20 point leads were in the far west (Montana, Idaho. Utah, Arizona, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska , and Wyoming which had 2 out of three votes for McCain. I do not think with that Westerners voted for race but more for their conservative values. Western Arkansas is as much western as it is southern. There are mountains ,cattle ranches, elk hunts, Texas style Bar B Que and the capital of the Cherokee nation in Oklahoma is forty mile from here. It a great place to live as is the Great State of Washington.
Bill PS I love rocks!!!!!!

Fossils
my golly, agates, shale, what else???? i guess south dakota is really a rockhunter's paradise! i didn't use a real chisel, i used a thin screwdriver. i think if i'd used something wider my pieces would be larger. plus, i need a larger vise. i didn't use one at all, i did it on lots of paper on a kitchen counter.

Franklin, N.C. Gem Mining
It was suggested on the C&T board that I add this here, so I am doing so-- hope nobody minds. :-)
http://pakasdollmaker.com/gemmining.html
I have put together a bit of a "fan page" (completely non-profit; I am not being paid for anything I am posting and I make no money from my site at all) for the mines in Franklin, North Carolina. Basically, a little collection of general information, mine reviews, and other suggestions for a trip to the area, plus some photos. As my disclaimer on the page says, some things are just my own opinions and I could be wrong on some things, so of course keep that in mind. Just wanted to create a reference to help those who are looking for information and to help encourage folks to visit.

Who Has Any Good Ideas for Kirsten's Next Trip?
No area is comparable to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota where Mt Rushmore & the great Crazy Horse are nestled. Not only that, we also have the only locations in the world where one can find the Fairburn Agate, the most sought after agate. Our Agate Hounds have the best noses, to make sure she goes away with a Fairburn Agate. DB
