  • Oregon treasures I have enjoyed all of the shows and wish there were many more. I loved the program about Oregon sunstones especially and hope to bring my family to do that this fall. One treasure I'd like to see Kirsten seek is our fabulous CHANTRELLE MUSHROOMS. They are plentiful in the fall throughout most of the coast mountain range, and they are some of the finest mushrooms in the world. The fall colors would also be spectacular for the program. It would be a pleasure ...

  • Types of Opal in Oregon Hey, we have been out and about some this summer, and have found what we think is a type of opal. Up in the Ochoccos and in the Blues (Umatilla National Forest). The Ochocco stuff is mainly white-ish with some slight pink in it, and the stuff we found in the Blues tends to be clearer. The Ochocco stuff is for the most part, very crumbly. I am wondering if you can find stable pieces, can they be made into jewelry? Is it desirable? I know up at Richardsons you can find some of the really blue stuff (my son was there with someone and did not pick some up for me!!!) and also would like some for working with. Here is another question about it all. Can this "common/Oregon" opal be cut, ground down, or carved into? Does it break really easy? Last, does anyone know of one site that gives good descriptions, pictures and data on the types of opal here in Oregon?

  • Central Oregon Coast Area Hello my precious dirt nerd family! I am finding myself blessed to be headed to the central oregon coast (Beverly Beach and Lincoln City) two weekends in a row in a week or so.

I am just wondering if anyone would like to share their favorite locality in the area, on or off the beach?

I have some favorite spots for agates near Cape Meares and I have Tim's DVD and Gem Trails of Oregon so I am <i>aware<i> of these localities, personal stories?

I've heard there is pyrite at Otter Rock in clay and we're going to explore the Augite off Hwy 6 on the way in. The hubby is less into fossils than shiny rocks but I love it all! :)

Thanks ahead for sharing guys and gals. :)

  • gems in oregon & northern california Hello everyone. This is my first post on this site. Unfortunately I don't have much to offer. I went to the beach at Lincoln City, Oregon, last weekend, to a park called Road's End. I arrived at near high tide, so collecting was poor. I spoke to several locals and was told that since there have been no big storms on the coast this season, the sands are deep and gravel beds are mostly covered. Normally our winter storms sweep the sand and fine gravels out to sea, exposing lots of agates, jaspers, beach glass, petrified wood, and other beautiful stones. I also spoke to a man operating a sluice box at the Road's End Park beach. He was working the mineral sands in search of gold flakes, and claimed to find enough to keep him coming back. Some I suppose might have laughed, but I thought it was great and hope he finds a fortune! My advise is to stop at any beach on the Oregon coast to explore the gravels that wash ashore. Just don't turn your back on the ocean. Sneaker waves have swept away many careless folks here. Have great fun and be safe!

  • My first trip to Oregon I am trying to set up a trip for myself and my girlfriends to visit Oregon to dig for sun stones and fire opals. Does anyone know where these mines are and how far away from each other they are. We would like to be able to rent a camper when we get there. Any suggestions of where to rent. What is the best time of year to visit etc. I await a response. Thank you in advance.

  • Biggs/ Rufus Oregon
"No, most of what we collected was south of Biggs near the old jasper mine. It appears that the ODOT uses the place we went to to dump all the rock and dirt that fall off the cliffs and onto the highway. Took pics today of all our finds including those from the canyon above Rufus and will be posting them when I get the chance.
    Dave"
I will post some pics of my Oregon collection. I love the Oregon jaspers and agates The Biggs jaspers are one of my favorites.

  • I'd love any info re: Holly Blue in Oregon.. Years ago a good friend toled me about a beautiful stone. "Such a bitchin color," he said, very excited. "Only in Oregon he added. It's called Holly Blue, and its rare."
I had no reason to doubt his knowledge. Perhaps the story, was just that..a story. Or maybe not, and that will be, Fun in the Sun, for us this summer !

  • Any rivers near portland Oregon worth panning for gold in? HI: try going to www.oregonrock.com. It;s a great website and lots of info. Also, you can get a Merck's map at most Hallmark or stationary stores. The hunters use that map, and it shows all the BLM, FS, State Forest roads. It also shows rivers/streams. I believe you can print a free topo map at www.gorp.com. Check w/the BLM-they have places where you can pan for free-There is a spot in Canyonville (douglas county) which is on BLM land.
Check some of the govt' websites...I can't remember which page/dept handles it, but there is a website about Oregon mining/laws, many which date back to the mid-1800's that are still applicable today, ie.claims.
And why do I know this? I had a friend who used to take me to some great places to go hiking, and I got really interested in places to see/do/rockhounding in Douglas County. I now live in Indiana, but plan on getting back to Oregon as soon as possible!

Good luck...Also, one last place would be the Multnomah Library. They might have some of those aforementioned maps and you'd be able to make photocopies. One last thought and then I'm done...if you can find any older maps, the old logging roads will be there-these can be really useful too! and the best days to go out in the woods or out on the logging roads is on Sunday-the logging trucks don'e run then.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Quartz & Zeolites in Basalt matrix - Western Washing/Oregon Localities Hi my lovely Washagonian (washington/Oregon folk) dirt nerds, I need your help. I have searched the site and the web but I have not found a good solution to my dilemma.

I have some GREAT Zeolite and Quartz specimens however they are nicely nestled in some pretty tough basalt. We got them out of hiding with chisels and big whackum smackum hammers but now how do we get the rest of the matrix off? This is the first time I have hunted and prepared this type of material so I'm just, well call it clueless. :)

Is this where I break the dental pic out or is there a better method? I am also aware of once I free my quartz crystals, to soak them in an acid bath to remove any staining but I'm not that far yet.

What about the zeolites? I do have some furry zeolites so those will just be separated and removed from the host rick and put way way up high where the cat cannot reach them but what about cleaning the smaller crystalline zeolites? Will an acid bath eat alumna silicates?

Thanks you guys! You’re the best!

  • Morels in Oregon Well it is Morel season! I have been going out the past couple of weeks and first you find what looks like a morel but it is actually called a Verpa. It is a false morel. A true morel has the cap connected all the way down the stem. The false have a cap that is only attached to the top of the stem like most mushrooms. They grow under Cottonwood trees along river beds. If you are into making some extra money on the Morels, get out there! I saw it on Cash and treasures along with the truffle hunts. I have been collecting them both ever since and making "EXTRA CASH"

  • Gold Paning in North Eastern Oregon in the Blue Mountains I hear there is a lot of gold up in the Blue Mountains and I would love to see Cash and Treasures locate some. I have talked to people that hunt up in that areas and they have found spots in little creeks that are rich with gold. They would tell where though?

  • Pacific Northwest Hunting A month ago I found a site from the Oregons rock club. Goto www.orerockon.com This fellow is a little crusty but ignore that because he will give you hundreds and hundreds of place to rock hunt in Washington, Oregon & Idaho. There are maps, directions and co-ordinates and just about everything else you would need. This man has been to a great many of these sites himself and of course other rock hunters provide added info. He has spent Hundreds of man-hours putting out this DVD. All for just $40.00. Lets see you fill your truck with gas and then compare. Put it on your computer and start looking But be sure to read his instructions closely.
