Starting a new thread dealing with thundereggs. I have collected thousands of these beautys over the years and this might be a great way for others to show off their own thundereggs. Feel free to add to this site and enjoy.

I spent the weekend checking out a few sites. I will post the entire trip report this evening ..
I started saturday morning going to a site i found on google earth. 46°23'46.59"N 122°41'20.57"W I noticed 2 quarrys and some river and creek access so i thought i'd try my luck. Upon arriving at the first quarry i met a gate and lots of go away signs.. sitting there gathering my maps to get to point B, I met a guy who came flying up towards me on a gold cart very worried. His name was Anthony, and he oversees the warehouser land near salmon creek and this quarry.. he calls it the "Mt St Helens tree farm" .. We spoke for about an hour and the quarrys are still in use and off limits because of tweekers stealing stuff .. but and I got his contact info, and he took me to a private access point to the creek and said im welcome to come back with or without a group and just vie him a call.. I spent an hour in the creek and pulled out some smaller nice super clear agates. He was super cool and a hoot to talk to! It was getting very hot by then on saturday and i was about 300 yards up the creek. the creek was low enough to walk through it in most parts and i didnt have to wade.. I found a few corporlites and some agate.. nothing compared to the quality or size i've been pulling from Adna. After i left this area i headed up 505 to I5 back to the 508 and up towards the books location for Lucas creek. I used the directions from the gem trails book since i didnt bring the directions from here.. looking back that was probably a mistake.. when i arrived to the first place, the road that was meantioned in the book was very over grown, and the trees at the bottom of the hill looked 10 years old, and were very much blocking any creek access. ID ont know about you, but i didnt feel like trying my luck in waste high grass i couldnt see through.. I made it back to the car after wandering down to some old diggings.

So, it was WET and MUDDY, but we had a great time! It took us exactly 2 hours from my house so we arrived at 10:30 am. There was still snow on the ground in places so you can imagine the mud. Even when it warms up, you might consider wearing wear rubber boots, rubber gloves and clothes that you don't care about. YOU ARE GOING TO GET WET! (I've washed my shirt 3 times and can't get the "iron mud" out of it). Also, watch out for the repaired screens because they will rip your gloves.

It took us some time to figure out what we were looking for and locate a good stash in the pile of dirt you ultimately take to the sluice. (Ignore the forest service rangers who tell you to dig in the “dry dirt” first because it’s “easier”) The key is to move around the dirt pile until you find an area that has garnets. I think we found the majority of our garnets the last hour. Don’t spend more than a few minutes on each screen, they are either in there, or they’re not!
I noticed that someone with a handicap sticker drove up to drop off a person who couldn’t walk the ½ mile from the parking area to the garnet site. It's uphill and a fair hike. For your $10 they provide all the equipment, so wear your rubber boots, a hat for shade (or rain) and pack a good lunch with plenty of water. I overheard a discussion that weekends can get so busy that you have to wait your turn to use the sluice. With 30+ people, it was a bit crowded already but we were still able to use all the equipment without waiting. There is no shade & only 3 picnic tables. Check out my album at http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/album/18496/kabnfvr. Worth the trip but if you expect to bring home handfulls of gem quality garnet - forget it! For every 100 garnets you find, you MIGHT find one star garnet worth making into jewelry. In our almost 2# of stones - I think we have a couple that MIGHT have potential. Kabnfvr

Have any of you been to McCoy Creek, south of Randal Washington? I've read descriptions in Gems and Minerals of Washington, Gem Trails of Washington, Rockhounds Guide to Washington and the OreRockOn DVD. Sound intriguing, just from the difficulty of accessing it. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. If anyone wants to join me on an exploratory mission, just let me know. It's close to Pinto Creek, which has some excellent fly fishing, I found while looking for the jasper lens there.
Thanks much, Dan

Greetings all, well here it is, another book about a dig. I am going to try something different this time. Instead of typing the report here I made up a page with report and pictures. We had a good time, but then again, getting outdoors and diggin' in the dirt can't get much better. Read it if you dare. lol Paul

Hi One and All
Got in about seven thirty this morning from the T-Egg gathering at Don's claim down by Harper Oregon. It was a long trip down, about eleven hour drive from here. We got in about 11p.m. friday night. Don and his freind Steve were already there. Dave and Livey and their nephew Kevin were there also. We were the last to get in that night. We quickly set up our tent and got things squared then did a little visiting. We all hit the sack about 1:30 a.m. and went quickly to sleep. About five a.m. I got up and started to check out the area. It was a beautiful countryside all around the claim. Lots of rolling hills and a nice draw on the south and east side of the camp site. The little creek on the south side of the camp was full of agates. The evening before Kevin had done some exploring and found some nice stones and a piece of common opal. I walked up the knoll above camp and took some photos of the lay out. I saw T-eggs laying all over the ground, and pieces of t-eggs every where. There were pieces of obsidian, jasper, agate, perlite, apache tears, and pieces with calcite crystals and quartz crystals, And I hadn't even started to hunt yet or dig in the banks. After a short bit I went back to camp. By then Don and Steve and my brother John were up. Dave and livy came out and we started coffee. Steve started checking the hill right above the camp for newly exposed T-eggs and JOhn and Don went up the draw on the east side of camp to look for a new bed. I pulled out some stones and wood I had brought down with mee to show the others and dave brought out some he had brought with him. As we were doing this Don and John came back and Don brought out some he had with him. We had some coffeee and got Kevin and my son Phillip out of there nice warm beds togo to work. We loaded up and headed up the knoll to dig. Dave, Kevin, Phillip, and myself started inone place and Don and Livy and John went to the upper trench.

At the margins of the Snoqualmie Batholith there are great places to find several silicates, including precious opal. I found a large chunk of wheathered Andasite that has layers of common yellow and white opal, and several large pockets of dark blue crystal precious opal. I have slabbed some of the boulder and have cut my first cab from this material. It seems to be harder than AU opal, but it did not crack or craze at all. The patterns are broad flash to pin-fire, and the colors are green, orange and purple in that order of degree.
The area is located above the railroad trestle above I-90 going east, close to the summit. There are several rock falls above the tracks. Look for eroded Andasite by looking for white seams running through the rock. The opal seams to occur where the boulders have been overlaid by a brecciaed mix of brown agate fused together with a light pink sandy material. I only found the one boulder with opal, but there were several smaller stones with traces of opal. The source is a cliff face that is very difficult to get to, so the rock fall is your best bet. It was suggested on the C&T board that I add this here, so I am doing so-- hope nobody minds. :-)
http://pakasdollmaker.com/gemmining.html I have put together a bit of a "fan page" (completely non-profit; I am not being paid for anything I am posting and I make no money from my site at all) for the mines in Franklin, North Carolina. Basically, a little collection of general information, mine reviews, and other suggestions for a trip to the area, plus some photos. As my disclaimer on the page says, some things are just my own opinions and I could be wrong on some things, so of course keep that in mind. Just wanted to create a reference to help those who are looking for information and to help encourage folks to visit.

I may have posted this in a low-resolution version earlier: my apologies if I did as it was extremely poor visually. Youtube has changed recently and posts only the low-res version on startup, and I didn't catch that change -- under "Views" hit high resolution and you'll have the movie as uploaded. The very best of luck to you all in chasing your dreams! MM

Myself, my husband and two girls and headed to Eastern Wa August 16th and coming back the next weekend. We are learning about rock hunting and are wondering if anyone is available to meet us either Sat the 16th or the following weekend the 23 or 24th to help us learn how to look for petrified wood etc at Saddle Mtn? Also, does anyone know of any other interesting places to look along the way. We are traveling from Puyallup to Spokane.
Thanks, Wendy

Was a beautiful day uptop Sadlle Mtn today as we arrived around 11:30 am.Slight breze, not to hot just right but still managed to work up a sweat trying to keep up with the two youngNs (8& 16).There mother has just recently joined the local club and is quite enthusiastic when it comes to hunting for rocks,Anyrocks.Very light pressure as I only saw two others digging.Sure is pretty up there. We called it quits at 2pm with 3 buckets of nice, fist size tumbling material.Took them back to that hole where Jeff ,Paul and I dug a month ago.We enlarged that hole somewhat and took out 1/2 dozen nice size pieces.

Great show! Tourmaline is so beautiful and being a novice facetor it would be nice to be able to find the stones then cut them. Oh, to get out of the snow and get warm in southern CA and find tourmaline. Life couldn't get much better...Could it? lol
I have to admit, I felt sort of sorry for the camera-men who found the gold nuggets and had to give them to Kirsten. lol You would have probably had to pry that 1/3 oz nugget from my clinched hand before giving that one up.
