They say it themselves on their websites. The Royal Peacock from season 1 www.royalpeacock.com The Bonanza Opal Mine LLC season 2 www.bonanzaopals.com Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine www.nevadaopal.com Their prices are essentially 50 for tailings at all 3. Thats all the Bonanza offers and I think the least possibility. The Peacock also allows digging in the opal bearing clay bank at 150 a day. At Rainbow Ridge you can buy a 3 yard bucket for 500. Opal Queen Mine has gone private www.opalqueen.com last price was 1,000 I am appointment only guide and claims www.virginvalleyopal.com for complete information. 7 out of 7 found this valuable. Great info. Thanks. If you had to pick just one place to go search for opals from the list above, where would you go?

"Great info. Thanks. If you had to pick just one place to go search for opals from the list above, where would you go? "We say this all the time...All the mines are our neighbors on different sides of the valley or mountain. The pocket odds in any mine vary by place to place and day by day even with the tailings that are more mixed. (with non opal bearing overburden, not on purpose it's just that you can't keep it only the varying layer that has gems) Any given day it can be any given place...so I go for volume if cost is not a concern buckets at Rainbow ridge. Next virgin bank at the Peacock, last the tailings at any of the mines. I do just as well at any of the 3. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I'm late to the discussion. As much as I really want to go to Nevada for some of the incredible opals there, it is REALLY out of my families price range, even the tailings (there are four of us). So, what would be an alternative we could afford and be at least hopeful to find something?

I'd really love to get out to Royal Peacock one of these days. Any ideas on where to stay? I remember reading that there were a few trailers there for nightly rent, but if not, then where?

"I'd really love to get out to Royal Peacock one of these days. Any ideas on where to stay? I remember reading that there were a few trailers there for nightly rent, but if not, then where?"I just got back from a trip to the VV Opal area at the beginning of the month....there are several options depending on what is comfortable for you. We stayed at The Royal Peacock's camp ground area. They have an area for tent camping with tables and fire rings. There is an area for RV's and Campers with hookups available. The really nice thing about this site is the hot shower and bathrooms. The prices are reasonable (see their website the exact amount). Just as you turn off to the mines there is a free campsite - toilets only and I am not sure they allow tents - I mostly saw RVs. If you are not the camping type youcan stay at the little hotel/diner/general store Denio Junction - the folks that run it are really fun - but - it is at least a half hour drive to the opal mines. If you stay at the Royal Peacock Campgrounds you can go to any of the mines and you are literally in the middle of all four of them! You should try to plan a side trip to the Spectrum Sunstone Mine right over the border in Oregon while you are in the area!! LOL! Hope that helps... Robyn Hawk 1 out of 1 found this valuable. How did you guys do with the opals? Maybe you mentioned this somewhere and I missed it . Just curious. We hit the Spectrum mine this summer and had a blast. Just didn't have the time to hit the opal mines. I think a person needs about a month and unlimited cash to hit everything down in that neck of the woods. :-) Paul Do you find this valuable? |

"Thanks for the info.Nope - I haven't really posted a trip report - did great with the Sunstone - Jessica, Gary (?) and Mikey at the Spectrum couldn't have been nicer...we did a conveyor belt run and came home with at least a 5 lb bucket of sunstone each! The problem was it really spoiled us for the hard work at the opal mines! LOL! Rainbow Ridge we did well at a couple good sized (walnut) pieces with fire lots of tiny pieces. We picked up a bunch of what looked like clear glassy opal (like jelly opal) that turned out to be contra luz. We weren't impressed with the new wall at Royal Peacock but we will return there next year - hopefully they will figure out a way to open the great tailings in the old area. The thing with Royal Peacock is that I really like the Flourescent Opal and Moss Opal in that area...in fact you can find chips of the Flourescent Opal all over the RP camp grounds. Our friend went to the Bonanza - tailings only - you have to be a share holder to work the wall here. He found a couple small really firey pieces. Just as we were leaving we stopped into Denio Junction for Brunch before the 12 hour drive home and noticed a flyer for the Opal Queen - maybe a future option. We did a conveyor belt run and came home with at least a 5 lb bucket of sunstone each!Wow, you guys did great at the Spectrum. We too did the belt run and came away with 3 + pounds of stones. Here is the link the thread and trip report if you want to check it out. http://cash-and-treasures-wiki.travelchannel.com/thread/1785424/Spectrum+Sunstones+and+Richardson+Rock+Ranch+trip+Report We got a couple of reds, we would have always liked more, but I don't think there is anyone who goes there that doesn't wish for more reds. lol The high grade pile we bought and brought home with us I think will result in more stones than we got on the belt run. All in all it was a great time, nice frendly people and good stones. I wish we did have time to do the opal mining. That was on my list of things to do when on vacation, however, there were other members of the family that wanted to do different stuff other than mining. Da Bums!! lol Maybe next time that is if fuel costs drop a bit. Man it was expensive fuel trip if you will. Hopefully a trip om the future. Thanks for the additional info. Hey have you started working on the sunstones? Paul Do you find this valuable? |

"Paul asked: Hey have you started working on the sunstones?Hi Robyn, even thought I facet, I am thinking of sending the reds out as well. I am too nervous to facet the good ones. lol Any other colors don't bother me. Are you sending them to a commerical facetor or a friend? Just curious, as on the resource page there are a couple of commerical facetors listed, but we are always looking for more to put up on the page. Paul Do you find this valuable? |

"Hi Robyn, even thought I facet, I am thinking of sending the reds out as well. I am too nervous to facet the good ones. lol Any other colors don't bother me.Yes - I am sending them out to a commercial faceter - I agree that there is a skill to cutting these gems and I think that it is important to find someone familiar with Oregon Sunstone! There are several faceters I use - and I will add them to the resource page when I get a minute (currently in the last minute stages of our local "Gem Show" - twoweeks out). For Oregon Sunstone I would probably use either John Franke at Facet Shoppe (gemmcutter.com) or NorthWest Jewelers (nwjewelers.com) as they live in the area and have experience cutting these amazing gems! Boy, turn your back for a minute. On OPALS. VIRGIN VALLEY OPALS. Maybe the rain has stopped. Set records back almost a hundred years. Let me catch up from earlier questions. The Opal Queen is Open. 150 a day for bank digging. New banks have been opened. He was charging 50 for tailings. Jeffs a great guy and it does have opals. The Peacock tailings are 75 and bank 180 this year. They do have 3 rentals. You can tent in any of the designated campgrounds or in peace on your own claim. The peacock is the resort with washing machines and hookups. The CCC camp just has the hot springs showerhouse and several pit toilets. Rainbow Ridge is only a mine and they went to 70 for tailings this year.. Do you find this valuable? |

As alternatives around close for free with "color" I'd go find some rainbow obsidian or jaspers. Davis Cr/ Lassen Cr areas in northern Ca are hot with lots of material up in the woods. Hart Mtn has an array of agates, jaspers, and even precious opal. Theres Scoria (apache tears) on the refuge with petrified wood. Some agate jasper. Theres the crystal fee digs on Petersen Mtn. I just saw a amythest scepter that was almost 2 feet long on Pala gem news. Dig in and search for info or a club near you for ideas. Do you find this valuable? |
