""lake" and "orchard" ?- these are not terms we who live in congested Los Angeles remember.Yeah I can imagine being in a big city it would be hard to get rid of stuff. I think the guy who runs your shop has the best idea, just take it back out into the field or maybe in your case, just keep it unto you head back down to Oceanview or the Himalaya and give back to them. lol One thing about it, your club is large enough with probably a large shop that tailings may actually be a problem. Our shop has some small equipment and room for maybe 4 or 5 people to work sort of comfortably. The tailings is more cutting than anything else and just gets dumped outside the door when they are done. Of course we hunt different things up here. Mostly picking up just the rocks. I am probably the only one who orders RMM on a regular basis. We don't go out and gather buckets of material to run later. And what the heck is going on. You having to work on a Saturday! Like real bummer. Like how many WIKI boards do you check? I think it is cause you are still sorting RMM. That important stuff! lol Have a great Sat. ;-) Paul Do you find this valuable? |

this person obviously did not work very hard...AND often times the groups at the Himalaya dig are small 10-15 people because they are open 5 days a week. Unlike the other places which prefer chaotic groups of 30-60+ ...obviously there will be less finds per hour with less people... Do you find this valuable? |

"the cryogenie mine is closed"Thank you for this update. I had heard a rumor that it had been closed down to tours since they don't do all the MSHA reqirements like the rebreathers (which are disigned for a totally different type of mine and really don't apply to the pegmatite mines - but it is a rule). I never found much in their dumps - in 3 or 4 trips. But I thought the location was nice and I liked the mine tour. They also had some nice specimens for sale and their prices weren't too bad. "this person obviously did not work very hard...Hi again Rebecca, Great timing for this post. Next weekend the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies is having a double tourmaline field trip - with 67 people scheduled to go to the Oceanview Mine in Pala on Saturday and 50 to go to the Himalaya Mine dig at the Lake Henshaw Resort on Sunday. I'm a little worried about how this group of "real rockhounds" will react to these two fairly restrictive pay-to-screen sites. Sometimes, since they pay the $40 or $60 dollar fee, people seem to expect a guarantee to find a piece of gemmy tourmaline worth over $100. I have seen a few people find spectacular pieces of tourmaline or kunzite worth over $200 at both the Himalaya and the Oceanview - but I have been to these two locations well over 2 dozen times and have seen amazing finds only about 4 or 5 times. I don't go to casinos - so I don't know how these odds compare to "winning big" at gambling. On almost every trip, there are at least a few people who find something of worth that makes them happy. And I go mostly for the day in the sun with good people - so I always leave happy. Do you live down near San Diego? Ellen Do you find this valuable? |

the cryo genie was just not finding any more tourmaline. people have remarked on this thread that often times mine owners take years to make their initial investment back.... this one sadly did not make it. yes, beautiful local if they ever do open it back up for tours.

i would not go to any place other than the himalaya gem dig. the material itself is better than the competition. people who went else were expressed their regret. (and so did i).

"Up until about 13 years ago, I lived right next door in Riverside. We used to hunt the tailings piles from the old Stewart Lithia mine. Is that place still open to rockhounds? I know that the mine itself is off limits, but we used to find some nice micromounts and small cabinet specimens in the tailings. Occasionally a nice tourmaline large enough to facet . "Yes, great show and my first introduction to this sport! I'm headed to San Diego next week- is the mine where Kristen found her gorgeous tourmaline stone - turned $12,000 pendant really open to treasure hunters??? I'd love to know where..."Yes, well, this in an interesting post you've done here and I just wanted to set the record straight. I've been both to the Himalaya Mine as well as quite more recently, the Himalaya Mine dig at Lake Henshaw. The only reason Kirsten found that gem was because someone put it there for the promotional value that that stone would bring from the Travel Channel. With that said, I will say this, I myself have found some very nice stuff, especially at the Mine Site itself. I had good luck at the dig too as I believe I more than covered the $75.00 entrance fee. I understand many people haven't been so lucky, but I think most are happy for the experience and many do find nice stuff. There are a number of other pay sites around the area and some other old mines that are closed that I've had good luck at too. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The only reason Kirsten found that gem was because someone put it there for the promotional value that that stone would bring from the Travel Channel.this is the most honest opinion of tourmaline mining... i would only add this: "The harder you work, the more tourmaline you will find" this is true if you follow directions and know what you are looking for. p.s. keep an eye open for other beautiful minerals, anything that looks different, neat, or interesting Do you find this valuable? |
