That is only about 3 hours away from me. Is it a profitable excursion? And do you plan a trip in the near future? I am new to this "treasure Hunting" stuff and really would like someone to show me how to do this.

There are many places to go in North Carolina. Emeralds, Sapphires, and Hiddenite are the most popular. There are several mines that you can get buckets or even rent someones mine, even camp out and mine. Some of the ones that I have been to are in Franklin, NC Spruce Pine, NC, Little Switzerland, lots of towns around the mountains of western nc. just do a search for gem mining in nc and you will find lots of places to go. I really have enjoyed going and last year we did a family reunion and rented out a mine for the day. The kids loved digging and playing, we enjoyed finding gems and visiting with the family. i hope we make it a yearly tradition. I would love to go to some of the places that I have seen on the show. I would like to go on some of the sunken treasure and bottle searches. I find this new hobby alot of fun.

Yea, we used to live in Hiawassee GA, that's about as North GA as you can get and only about 45 minutes to Franklin.NC. Also there's miniing over in Tennessee towards Cleveland and Chattanooga - take US Hwy64 west along the Ocoee river and there's signs - lots of good whitewater rafting as well.Stop into a big motel land look at some of their brochures on things. They'll surely have some on mining and panning for all kinds of stuff. Also, in GA go down to Dahlonega, where the US gold rush really started and you can still dig/pan for gold in that area. It's about 45 minutes north of Atlanta on 400. Easy to go 285 and then 400 north. 7 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

The #1 thing is...if you are going to western NC in hopes of finding an emerald (or any gem) worth thousands (or even hundreds) of dollars, prepare to be disappointed to the extreme. Most of the "gem mining operations" in western NC are tourist traps that sell you buckets of "mine ore" to sift through looking for precious gems and minerals. What C&T fails to mention in their show is that most of these buckets have been "salted" or "seeded" with stones from other places...most often, South American mines. Even these lean toward the semiprecious stones, and have been cherry picked before being sold to the NC mine operators. This isn't to say that you wont find some nice, pretty rocks, maybe even some that can be cut and made into jewelry...but you are highly unlikely to find anything of real value. Even operations that let you search their creek or dig piles for stones have "seeded" these areas as well. The great emerald they found on the show was at a commercial mining operation that isn't open to the public. There are places that you can dig/search for true native emeralds, but the chance of finding any emerald crystals of sufficient size and clarity to become a real gem quality emerald is miniscule. Go to www.wncrocks.com and do a search of "Crabtree" to see what kind of emeralds you can REALLY find in NC at these places that are open to the public. If you want to go to western NC and pay $$ for some pretty rocks sight unseen (which probably aren't from NC), you may have fun. If you are expecting to find a gem worth real money, remember what PT Barnum said...there's a sucker born every minute. 9 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you? |

You think they would tell the public so that they wouldn't be scamed. Thanks Purplepat.

"You think they would tell the public so that they wouldn't be scamed. Thanks Purplepat."Actually, there is a North Carolina state law that says that the "mine" must make it known that the "seeded" buckets are indeed seeded with non-native materials. I don't know if that's posted on a sign at the site, or if the operator tells you before you purchase one, or what. But my real intent was just to let people know that they shouldn't be heading to these places and expecting to find carats worth of gem quality emeralds in the rough. Allegedly, some of the "seeded" operations give you a pretty fair amount of semiprecious gemstone material in your buckets (often related to how much you spend on your bucket). But I don't know that you couldn't just buy some of that material as cheap (or at least get exactly what you want) off of eBay or a local rock shop. Actually, the photos leading to this page are a pretty good example of the kind of stuff you can find in these buckets. It would be interesting for the posted who posted the photos to note how much money she spent on the bucket (or buckets) to get that amount of material. While you can buy smaller inexpensive buckets, it isn't hard to spend $50-$100 for a bucket either. And keep in mind it will cost you money if you have to pay someone to cut one of those stones into a faceted stone or cabochon that can be placed in a setting. We plan on visiting the Rio Doce, which allegedly throws in the cost of faceting two stones (faceting valued at $40/stone, I think) if you buy the $100 bucket. And allegedly they put some nice material in their buckets, but it's not going to get you rich. My real complaint is that the show leads people to believe that there are gem quality emeralds just laying around for the common guy to easily find for the price of mine "admission" and a little work, and it simply isn't the case. 13 out of 13 found this valuable. I just watched the NC Emerald C&T show last night. I had seen bits and pieces of it on the "Video Toolkit", but not the whole thing. Some things I have said on here were based on what others had told me.To be sure, the really nice emerald finds were from the commercial operation that isn't open to the public. It has been reported that at the Emerald Hollow mines, the buckets, creek and the dig piles are salted with various gemstones (and I suspect poor quality emeralds as well), so I take Kirsten's finds with a grain of salt. Still, she did apparently dig up some emeralds. What I found incredible is that the gem cutter said her rough emeralds were worth $300, but none of them were fit to cut gems from. If so, what makes them worth $300 and who would pay that price for them? Even more incredible was that he traded her the stones she found for one that he cut from a gem quality emerald, and that after cutting he valued at $2000. Now who is going to trade a $2000 stone for $300 worth of stuff that isn't even fit to cut a gem from? Would the average person visiting there get that kind of treatment? I think not. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |
