Rock/Gem hunting with kids in WNC

I have two boys, 5 and 2 that loves to dig up our backyard and collect rocks and stones. My HB took us to a gem mine in Franklin NC last year and the boys loved it. I was wondering if anyone can tell us a good place to hunt for rock gems around WNC without spending too much money or even free. I'm planning og getting them a metal detector aswell sometime this year. I would really love to get them started soon, weather permitting. Do you find this valuable?

Having just left Hayesville and moved to Seattle, WA - You could go out on 64 West over into Tennessee and check out a few places. I am trying to think where I saw the brochures - always ones in hotel lobby's - try that Quality Inn lobby in Murphy, or call the Tourist Board/Bureau and ask them about where you can go.

There's supposed to be some good collecting on Lake Chatuge, check closest to the areas where the feeder streams come into the lake and those feeder streams are good themselves. We found little sapphires in Bell Creek many years ago.

Lake Nottely might have some finds around it too, A metal detector is a great idea for walking around the lake shorelines. Don't forget to check the picnic area's too for that loose change or jewelry.
Do you find this valuable?

Go to Gem Mountain in Spruce Pine, NC. They have buckets that start at $20 and go up and that's for a 2 gallon size! The kids can share them too. Do you find this valuable?
