Searching for Tanzanite ! ! ! In CA ? ?
Jan 21 2008, 5:20 PM EST
We had seen one of the shows about a month or so ago and it was when they went searching for Tanzanite. I believe that it was in CA about an hour or so from Laguna Beach but not to sure. If anyone remembers the show or any info that would be great cause we would like to plan a vaction to where the treasure hunting was.

Hello there........What you probably heard is that there are several "Tourmaline" mines in California.....all of which are in the San Diego area. I tivo'd the program and then went to all the sites and all want "reservations". We'll make ours soon and then head out to see what's there. One of the mines is currently only getting quartz crystals but they are HUGE! I hope this helps........ Brenda Do you find this valuable? |

As the other person said, I think you're talking about the Tourmaline show. The Himalaya mine in San Diego county is the mine they went to for this show. There's another mine near there, the Oceanview Mine, which is the mine Brenda is talking about. They require reservations and are only open on Sundays. The Himilaya mine does not require reservations, its open daily but will be closed Tues and Weds starting in Feb. The fee is $75 per person. Go to www.highdesertgemsandminerals.com then click on "Himilaya Mine" on the left and they will give all the info you could want including address, phone number and a map. Good luck!Brandi Do you find this valuable? |

I've been to bothe the Oceanviw Mine and the Himalaya Mine and would recommend both - for differnet reasons.I was at the Himalaya dig last Sunday - and people were finding small but pretty tourmaline. The web site above gives all the info you need. If you go on a weekend, you'll meet Simon King, which is worth the price of admission alone. Make sure to talk to him and hear stories about the Himalaya Mine. For info on the Oceanview, go to www.digforgems.com and make reservations. You also get a tour of the mine. A guy stopped at the Himalaya dig after he left the Oceanview and had some sweet smoky quartz points and a nice large black tourmaline (schorl). The set-up there is similar to the Himalaya dig, where you screen tailings from a large pile. All the screens, shovels, water, buckets, etc. are provided. The owners help identify what you find. It is a great day out in the sun for a family. You are most likely not going to find a humongous crown jewel in the tailing pile - at either mine. But I'd much rather spend my weekends digging for tourmaline than doing laundry anytime. Ellen - Culver City Do you find this valuable? |
