I went crystal mining in Arkasas at the Wegner Mine near Little Rock and this was one of many mines there...It cost us $10 for all day to sift through the tailings or $22 person to actually go in the mine...we tried the tailings and we found some huge crystals and one person there found a crystal cluster as big as these size of a football, beautiful. Several people found more around us about that size....you just have go dig and unfortunately we had to get back to Dallas, but we plan on going back and going into the mine this time....about cleaning them...go to the Google site and type in "cleaning crystals" and there is a simple 3 step process which is explained in the site...try it, we did and our crystals are beautiful.....good luck 7  out of 7 found this valuable. Hi Kathy, a lot of people use oxalic acid to clean their crystals. You can find it on eBay or some of the rock and gem shops. Some will find a crock-pot at a garage sale put in the crystals and acid and use heat to speed up the cleaning process. There are sites out there that have instructions on cleaning the crystals. Here is one site I know of that explains it fairly well. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find them.

This is a neat site and they do have public digs I guess. I have no affiliation with them, just have purchase material from them. Of course safety first when it comes with working with acid. Hope this helps.

Hi Kathy, I happened accross a place where you can purchase oxalic acid for less than $10 per pound and that includes shipping. I don't know what is allowed for links and such here so I will not post the link here. If you are interested, please email me and I will send you the link. Or go to eBay and do a search on oxalic acid and you will find it there "buy it now".

I would think the oxalic acid would. I don't have any idea what the active ingredient in the Iron Out stuff is. And I am by no means an expert when it comes to cleaning crystals. Just have done it a couple of times in the past. My experience is only with the oxalic acid. Probably not much help. lol

I use a a product from Walmart that is used for cleaning decks. It is very inexpensive. At a hardware store you can get brick cleaning acid, also cheap. With either product use the proper safety equipment - eyes, hands, mouth and nose. Use outside and DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

CRL cleaner most people have this or u can get at Home Depot. I went to NC to go hunting and had the same problem. With all the money I had to spend to find stuff. Anyways I also went to the craft store and purchased a rock tumbler for $30.00 which will come in handy if I plan on visiting places regularly. Dont be shocked tho, the tumbler takes about a month to clean and polish the gems, however when its done they look fantasic. Good luck in your future searches. Torie Do you find this valuable?

Quartz crystals are cleaned with oxcylic acid. The method I use is to heat a gallon of water. I then add the hot water to a small old ice crest with my crystals and 3/4 cup acid. Note: this must be done outside and a person should wear rubber gloves. Let it set for a few days and walla clean crystals. The acid can be nutralized with baking soda. Add soda slowly as it foams.
Check out Tennesse National Directory for interesting sites.
