Tips and Tricks (for pleasure or profit)
Jan 24 2008, 11:54 PM EST As I read and read all of these threads, I thought it would be a really great idea to have a central repository of tips from those who have done it and those who are out there doing it. Also, if you have received great advice from somebody, this would be a great place to share it. I would like to limit it to tips, with no discussion, I know that sounds mean or possible narrow focus, but it's my thought just the same. So thanking someone can be done simply by clicking on the "did you find this information useful" link at the bottom of the post. And there is no need to criticize people for what they post. Hopefully I can get a Mod to key an eye on here or to make me a Mod with limited access just to this thread. Format: Topic:: (related to a specific gem or dig site or state or whatever) Tip: (your narrative) Reference Website (if any): So, with that in mind, share away and thank you in advance. RE: Tips and Tricks (for pleasure or profit)
Jan 25 2008, 12:20 AM EST I guess I will lead it off Hounding for Profit. If you are out on a year-round rock-hounding trek, collecting your treasures and putting them in a small trailer towed behind you can be of great value. If you have some of your treasures cleaned, polished or faceted, then of course keeping them inside your vehicle in a safe place is wise. But for raw finds it keeps your vehicle clean. Jan 25 2008, 1:29 AM EST Hounding for Profit... or pleasure Also, when getting started, even though you might be focusing on Rock Hounding, it is a good idea to carry along a decent used metal detector.......because nuggets are often found among Rocks, so are small meteorite fragmants. By carrying a metal detector along and sweeping as your Rock Hounding, you are essentially compounding your efforts in the field......and you may walk away with much more than you originally bargained for which you wouldn't have found without the metal detector. Just a helpful tip, hope it helps those looking for such information. 8 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 1 2008, 3:39 PM EST General When starting off you may be able to get god deals on hammers, picks, metal detectors, etc, at flea markets or even trade shows. It''ll save you some cash and used metal detectors can be just as good as brand new. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

RUBIES, SAPPHIRES, CHECK IT OUT. IF YOU HAD THE EQUIPMENT BOY YOU COULD DO WELL, BUT YOU HAVE TO COMPETE WELL TOO. THERE ARE SO MANY FOLKS SELLING NICE HANDMADE STUFF BUT IT IS ALL SO SIMILARLY OVERPRICED. EVERYONE LIKES TO FEEL LIKE THEY GOT A DEAL SOMEHOW. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Mar 2 2008, 1:07 AM EST Hi Jim, If you are asking me, I do it for a hobby amd therapy as a disabled person. Just like doing it and haven't sold anything though I given stuff away. I guess someday if someone offers some sort of payment or donation I may take it to replentish supplies. I guess I'll just leave the mess for the kids when I die. lol Paul Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Tips and Tricks (for pleasure or profit)
Mar 2 2008, 1:40 AM EST Whoa. What a question. lol How much do you want to spend. lol First things first, I think I would find a local rock and mineral club and attend some of their meetings and get involved that way. Those folks can steer you in the right direction when it comes to finding gems and minerals, how to prep them and finish them. As for getting started it might be as easy as getting a rock tumbler and related grits and polishes. Finding some material and if not truly interested in specimens or facet/gem grade material. (Eww this hurts me to say it) Get a hammer out and break them up into manageable pieces Sizes for the tumbler. You might want to find a local rock shop and go spend some time when them to get an idea about tumblers and other equipment. But if you really want to get into it, You will need a trim saw - a small rock saw, a lapping machine, and if you want to facet, a faceting machine, Some sort of grinders preferably diamond wheels. A slab saw - larger rock saw. Plus all of the related equipment. I purchase mine used online through eBay, Craig’s list or contacts through the local rock club. This is fun but hard to keep all these threads separated. lol Seems like we are chasing each other around in circles. lol Hope this is helping. Paul 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Tips and Tricks (for pleasure or profit)
Mar 2 2008, 2:47 PM EST Yes it can, but there is a good used market out there. Maybe check on estate/garage sales near you. Sometimes that is a good way to find and buy equipment. Of course there are many sites on line where you can purchase equipment. Local rock shops, etc. I just remembered there is a place in NC where a well known facetor does give lessions if you choose to go that route. He has a mine/digs site of sorts as well. I think his name is Jerry Cali. But can't remember the website. sry Do you find this valuable? |

He has faceted gems for Elizabeth Taylor among others. I think he does do lessons, pretty sure they run a week or more. But if you are really interested in it, might not be a bad person to learn from. He's supposedly extremely talented. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
