Good Hunting Places Around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc?

My husband and I would like to plan our first "treasure hunting" trip this summer and are looking for recommendations. We would like to stay within 10 hours/two states of Eastern MN. We are willing to try anything, but are not willing to pay lots for the experience. Does anyone have any ideas for us? We have gone agate hunting, but we are open to new agate sites as well. Thank you for any direction! 13  out of 13 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm guessing on the time, but given your location I'd suggest Keokuk Iowa to search for geodes. They may not make you filthy rich, but pretty ones can fetch a very nice price nonetheless. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

I have found that up in the Duluth-Superior range is real good, but also in the Mille lacs area. that's in the east middle of the state. Me , I just pick a gravel pit or road and walk, same with lakes.--Good luck in your adventures!! 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Wild,
If you drive up the Keweenaw Peninsula of MI you willl find many beaches with tons of agates. My favorite spot is The Great Sand Bay, Just North of Eagle River. There are many, many places to pull off to park and walk public land. You can follow this highway all the way to the tip at Copper Harbor. That is where Kristen scuba dove for agates. On your way home if you take the highway that runs through the center of the peninsula, you'll pass by many old mines and mine dumps. Lots of people stop and pick through the tailings, I have also; but I don't know very much of what to look for. (Some have metal detectors)

If you come to the lower peninsula of MI there are petoskey stones tand more agates to be had, My best places are on the Leelanau Peninsula. Email me if you want more specifics. Enjoy your trip!

I just took my first rock collecting trip, went to Indiana, found a guide and brought home cave onyx, calcite crystals, geodes and iron pyrite. It was a blast and I'm going to do it again. Pam

Pam -

Where did you go in Indiana to find geodes, and have you cracked any open yet (and if so, what did you find)? Can you post some pics? My wife loves geodes, and we're right next door to Indiana in Ohio.

Purplepat,
I will post pics tomorrow. I work at a middle school and have my rocks there for the kids to see. I found a free guide at the website Mindat.org His name is Steve Garza and he knows his rocks. He took me around Corydon, IN. He will guide anyone to his spots just to turn on another collector. I have only cracked open a couple of the golfball-sized geodes (I took my 5-year-old grandson on the rockhunt, he loves to crack them open). I do have 6 - 8 that are the size of a softball, but we are going to saw them open at school at a later date. I work with some kids who wouldn't get a chance to go on a vacation and I promised them they could saw the geodes open after school one day and keep them. So far, all of the crystals are clear (calcite, I believe I was told). I found one that was split about 3/4 of the way naturally and it is large clearish crystals. Bear with me - I may have to have my students do the pics! Pam

Any information/Directions to any of these sites in MI would be appreciative. I also heard about Traverse City for Agates. Are you aware of this location?
Thanks

Sorry, grandson in town and I'm not able to check computer every day.

I can help you with MI but ignorant about WI and MN. I hunt near Traverse more often than the upper peninsula of MI. You can find agates but the area is known for its Petoskey stones. The agates are smaller than you might find in the UP of MI. But, there are lots, lots of rock - I just don't know what they all are..
