We are going to retire soon and want to begin treasure hunting. We are asking for opinions of the best beginner metal detector to learn on, without becoming too frustrated with all the bells and whistles. We live in Alaska and have done some small panning and want to do more now that we will have the time. Any suggestions? Do you find this valuable?

Hi AKMOOSE. I don't know much about metal detectors, but I do own and use it on occasion. But I do know of a resource that you can check out that has some discussion about this very subject. The website is: http://thoam.com, one of the threads that recommends a detector http://thoam.com/index.php?showtopic=249. I think it will work. There may be more info there as well. Congrats on your up and coming retirement and best of luck with the treasure hunting. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi Akmoose,
If I was in your position, now that I know what I know, I would pick up an Ace 250. They are available from Kellyco.com and at a cheaper price than Garrett sells them. I got my first one shortly after they came out for $199. The wife now has one also, but hers cost $210 just 3 months later. I have a $1000 Bounty Hunter, but since using my Ace 250, the Bounty Hunter has not been taken out of the house. I am real impressed with the Ace. Most of the settings are done automatic when it is turned on. It has several choices for what you want to hunt for. It will also tell you the denomination of the coin before you dig it. Garrett outdid themselves when they built this machine. It is definitely a honey! Bob

Well it sounds like you want to find some gold with detectors? If that is true you need to look into maybe buying a 1800 or a Minelab Eureka that will find small gold. Don't let the name Minelab scare ya before checking on Ebay for a good used one. Thats what I did a few years ago and got all set up well under a 1000. Fisher goldbug will also do the trick. For coins I like Garret or White detectors. I'm a ole guy too and been at it for nearly 36 years. Like my friend Bob says don't pay retail when you buy a detector. DB
