Depends on your definition of "good".There are literally a dozen or more "gem mining" operations scattered around western NC that will sell you buckets of "enriched mine ore" to sluice through, but these buckets have generally been "salted" or "seeded" with non-native stones (primarily semi-precious rather than precious). There are several mines that you can actually search for native emeralds, rubies, aquamarine, tourmaline, beryl, garnet in western NC. However, it's fairly unlikely that you will find any clear precious gems of good size in these places. Here are some links for you to check out... http://www.wncrocks.com/resources/Collecting%20site%20crabtreemine1.htm http://www.wncrocks.com/resources/Collecting%20site%20little%20pine%20mine.htm http://www.sheffieldmine.com/about.html (this place salts their buckets, but they also have native dirt to search for native rubies) http://www.masonsrubyandsapphiremine.com/ http://www.hiddenitegems.com/mining.html (this place is known to seed their buckets, creeks AND dig piles, but you still may find native material) http://www.oldpressleysapphiremine.com/index.htm http://www.franklin-chamber.com/visitorInformation/gemMining.asp 12 out of 12 found this valuable. I would recommend you try Gem Mountain in Spruce Pine, NC. I have been there a few times and plan on returning this summer. Kay or Madonna is who I always deal with. They are good at helping me pick out just the right setting for my finds!
