Agate addiction
Mar 31 2008, 10:34 PM EDT
The sun stuck it's head out from behind the massive rain clouds blowing through our region and I couldn't resist the temptation to locate a few more of those CB agates on the last day of March Madness.Knowing my sunshine was limited and braving howling winds I elected to hunt a road just minutes out of town. It wasn't long after arriving at my selected spot that I was rewarded with a thumbnail size burgundy agate just waiting to be picked up.I concluded my hunt approx 90 min later just before another downpour. Total count 38 agates ranging in size from a dime to several that were a little larger than a silver dollar.Wondering if there are other agate addicts out there. A. 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

Man that is amazing! Wish we had such road beds around here. I think all of our agates washed down to you guys during the big floods. Cool stuff. You psot any more pics of your finds? At least it is sunny again. We had snow everyday for a week. Maybe, just maybe spring is coming back. I am ready for sure! Keep walking those roads. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Those are some very nice agates. That big one is amazing. What do you do with the agates? Polish or tumble them?

Paul..In the past I used to tumble them. Now I am just accumulating them for some unknown reason. I need to expand my horizons in the art of Lapidary. I have done some jewelery design in the past. There has to be some way to incorporate the agate into some form of pretty object other than putting them in a fish tank, can or the yard. That big one I believe could be cut.Local rock & gem club is having a show on the 19th & 20 in Kennewick. Going to see if I can locate someone who would be willing to cut it. Sadly I have no rock equipment.

Hey Andy, I'll bet you can find someone to cut it for you. If not Mail to me and I will be happy to cut it for you. I know may cabs have been made with agate. Maybe sometime in the future there will be some lapidary equipment in your household.Hey man I got to tell you this. Today my son and I helped my wife give out a bunch of plants for the local conservation district. Anyway we wee setup just across the road from the railroad tracks. We had a few minutes before things started so I sent him over to walk the tracks. He came back a short time later with railroad ballast rock pieces that has some small nodules on them. Plus a piece of what looks like flint. When things got quiet this afternoon he went back and found a few more of the basalt pieces with the nodules and a piece of petrified bog - chert or something of that sort. Everything around here is crushed basalt. Anyway, he got some finds in the roadbed. lol Nothing great mind you, but still samples just the same. Oh yeah there was one piece that definitely had some sort of crystal growth going on, but is never became a crystal. It appears to be a hexagon about 3/8 to ½” across. Red in color but just the outside of the crystal, the inside looks like basalt, it is sort of interesting. No agates though. Such fun. We still have 2 more days of plant and tree stuff. I am going to have to tell him to pick up only the big ones! I can see having a box of small samples lying around here. lol Do you find this valuable? |

That is another story. lol That sounds like an intriguing rock. It will be interesting to find out what it is. We are going to make Saddle mtn on the 26th barring any unknown circumstances. Also I am thinking about taking a little trip down there on Thursday if the weather holds. If you or anyone can make up let me know and we can meet up. I may let Jeff do a bit of walking on the roads. Who knows, could be good! Maybe the boat launch below the Dam. You think that would be good? Yes, let me know about the cutting when you find out. Happy to do it for you. If the 10" won't do it, when I get the 24" setup I know that will work. Keep them agates in sight! Paul Do you find this valuable? |

It will be interesting to find out what it is.Lakeside Gem & Mineral club has there show the 19th & 20th of this month at thr fairgrounds in Kennewick so I'll hopfully locate a cutter there.May see if they would like to use it in a demonstration cut. Were you refering to the 10th, this coming Thursday for a trip down? That's a good sate 4 me.R. U. doing a little scouting expedition prior to Saddle Mtn..trip? The wind has been unrelenting down here in the Basin. About ready to consider wearing goggles as the wind whips my eye's to the point they tear up and I can't see.Would rather put up with wind then snow. Do you find this valuable? |

That would be a great way to get it cut. Help them demo lapidary work and get your agate cut. Yes, we are talking the 10th to come down to Saddle Mtn for a little pre-outing scouting. (Say the fast 5 times. lol) That would be great if you could make it too. What a kick! My son and I are going to make a check of a couple of other sites on the way down. I would imagine we would get there late morning to noon. Maybe earlier, depends on the other sites. Again, more exploratory to see if we want to go back for some more serious digging and poking around. If you want to meet up at the mtn, maybe we can exchange phone numbers via email so we can keep each other posted. I know it can get windy in the basin. Here in Wenatchee, it can sort of fool you. Be calm here but and blowing like crazy 20 miles away. Then when the windy season is over it is so dang hot out there. BUT, wind yes, SNOW no!!! I think goggles are the way to go for sure! When the agates are covered with snow or your eyes are teared up so much you still can't find them elusive agate critters. lol Right now the plan is for a Thursday trip your way. Hopefully we can meet on the mtn. Paul Do you find this valuable? |

"She is a what ever is closest type. Fry pan's,Rolling Pin's, Vacuum cleaner's, even myown big rocks, LOLLOL I know the feeling. Though I am pretty lucky, after 28 + years she still hasn't hurt me too bad and does keep me around. That is a good thing. Though I have learned to keep items that can be eaily reached and thrown out of sight. Just in case. lol Do you find this valuable? |
