alaskan agates
Apr 25 2008, 5:43 AM EDT
a friend recently showed me some agates found at the beach here. they were amber colored....they say from iron oxydation?, with some clear and some darker areas, and you can see light through them. i looked for them myself and found several. how can i be sure they're agates, and if so, do they have any monetary value? also, is there any way other than using a tumbler, to polish them? one more thing, please... does anyone know about how to identify jade and malachite? thankyou

What do I do with my agates,,,,,,,,,,,,all the above. They are generally worth far more to the person that found them however they are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Size, banding, coloration, inclusions etc..............all play a role in factoring value.I simply keep mine in water untill I decide what I am going to do with them or it.

thankyou again for your response. i called a local jeweler today and asked him about the value of agates. he was a jerk..told me that if they were worth anything, did i think there would still be so many of them on the beach. i said, well, there's still lots of gold here, and it's valuable. i heard of a gal who's taking them and making necklaces with the raw agates, and that people want them, so i think you're absolutely correct... we also have a lot of plant fossils here. i understand they are somewhat rare, but don't know that for sure. do you know anything about them? also, thanks for the mindat link. it's a good site for pictures. happy rock hunting from alaska. i'm going to be looking for the gold, too. already got my pans ready. :)

I have been there before as I used to have family up there and still have friends up there. If you can post some pic's of your agates there are a few of us who can help you Identify them. Good quality cabochons of agate are excellent seller's. The carnelian variety or "reds" are very special to agate people. Feel free to send me a message on my profile if I can help in any way Good Hunting Tom Do you find this valuable? |

Depending on the agate is depending on it worth, I know that Lake Superior agates can fetch a pretty penny. Just recently ran across a site (I believe it was Rockhounds.com, but don't remember) that had them for sale in the hundereds of dollars price range, all depending on size, color and banding. They seem to be the most expensive. All the others like washatonian stated are worth more to the finder.Dave Do you find this valuable? |

thanks to all for the responses about agates. the ones i'm finding are mostly amber colored, and you can see light through them.. one is part yellow, and part clear. i will try to send some pics, so you folks can tell me if i'm barking up the wrong tree. but there are lots of these on the beaches here. you can spot them best at the water line, because the color shows up when they're still in the water. i live in the country near anchor point, on the kenai peninsula. have lived in alaska for @ 35 years now. originally from the midwest. thanks again. next post will have some pics in it, if i can figure out to do that. :)
