On the left panel, find NATIONAL DIRECTORY That will contain a state by state guide made by all the users here of good places to go. Avoid all the National and most State parks, they are trouble. Agree. Some State Parks allow rockhounding (not many). I do not know of any that allow collecting antiquities. I sure would ask the State Park Ranger about collecting. The same is true on National Forest or BLM properties (ask what the rules are.). Most government land limits the amount collected unless you hold a permit. You better know the rules. Just recently an arrowhead collector was arrested with 5 arrowheads in his pocket in the Ouachita Forest near me.. He received a 5 year sentence and a $5000 fine. He was put on parole but if he breaks parole he has 5 years in Leavenworth. Breaking parole is any infraction such as possessing a gun. He still has to pay the fine and now is a convicted felon. He can not vote, own a gun, and on a job application has to check yes to "Are you a convicted felon." Bill 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Pretty much any park this day in age is pretty well worked. I detected back in the early 70s, 80s and some in the 90s. Have a Mine Lab for gold and a Garrett for coins. I found hundreds of coins in parks in Aberdeen. The best I ever did was Fishers Grove along the James river East of Redfield. I only found a few smaller nuggets around here. I'm starting to meet some of these old farmers, and get permission to hunt their property. A guy's gotta do something until he can get west river to do some serious rockin. I think all National Parks are closed to metal detecting.State parks in Michigan vary some allow metal detecting in designated areas and a few completely ban the use of metal detecting. Most city parks are open.Warning national battle sites don't even have the detector in your automobile very stiff penalties.HH Ron

i got stopped by a person in uniform (can't remember what branch of the state she was from) who was brand new at cruising really small state parks. i had some pretty rocks in my hands and pockets, and she couldn't decide if i should get a warning or not. i convinced her not to, siting the book on rock hunting in colorado. i showed her the rock hunters rules--and she agreed that i shouldn't get a warning, ticket or any thing. and then...she started asking me about rocks and tumblers and the like. her 3 year old son loves picking up "pitty ocks". so, there we were, having an informal teaching session (as if i know so much, i've been doing this hunting and tumbling less than a year myself).all ended up okay! nan and yes-national parks, you're not to pick up and take anything, unless you pick up trash and put it in a dumpster. we were in yellowstone with a group of friends, camping for a week, and i found a deer antler. one of the others in our group put it in their tent. then we read the rules about not keeping anything. it moved around quite a bit, and was hidden in the most inventive places. well, dave and i have it here at home, and when i see it, i am so tempted to send it back with a really sincere apology. Nan, you should have invited that park ranger to join the Wiki. It couldn't hurt to have a few of them on our side. And I wouldn't send that antler back. At least not with a return address on the box. They might still fine you for removing it from the park.Don Do you find this valuable? |

i gave my phone number to the ranger, as i have now TWO cheap little toy tumblers and would give them to her free. i guess i scared her or something, cuz she never called. oh well. if she wants to spend $25. for a toy, be my guest. "for free-take, for buy-waste time" saying of my parents..... i heard it so much growing up when i wanted something and they didn't want to buy it. i really don't think she'd have joined--coming from me, she probably thought it was mind control or something!! nan Do you find this valuable? |

You should have told her that you were planting them to help beautify the park and that they would grow. ha. DB

Especially when we see people who are harmful or voilent to little kids walk away with a misdemeanor and 18mo. It's a messed up system. Doesn't cheange the fact that we should not collect on land in which we are not allowed to. Do you find this valuable? |

It's a messed up system.A person can always get a suspended Imp that after time spent or served the States Attorney makes the recommendation that the record be sealed. Then of course you have the 15 year rule in most states where after that time your rights are restored on some felony crimes. Lastly the Gov. can pardon ya :) So its not all bad, but your right, some of that rock, fish, game and fossil laws are a little heavy duty. DB Do you find this valuable? |
