I definitely have some Himalaya tourmaline pieces to swap - but I am a notorious procrastinator and it would make more sense for me to ship first in any swap.

I have some tiny pencil-lead thickness specimens, some chips and some pieces of matrix - nothing of great value but they are definitely from the actual Himalaya Mine. Ellen

My email for rock hounding stuff is mudd1973@yahoo.com

I agree about keeping addresses off the group and thru direct emails.

It stands for Harvey Mudd College - where I'll be this weekend for my 35th college reunion - geez I'm old. Last weekend at the Thursday Mine I was the oldest person there. I should have come up to your field trip to have hung out with the other two little old ladies.

A piece of carnelian or yellow agate would be neat. I've acquire quite a bit of nice pet wood at estate sales and am not sure what I'm not going to do with it all yet.

I have all kinds of rough and slabs. I am into good quality cutting material and have the same in trade. Texas material like plume, jasper and rare Llanite.Idaho plumes and jaspers, Indonesian material, Mexico and so on. I really like the chrysocolla and azrurite mixtures. I also have ultra rare agate from Sumatra Indonesia. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Andy & Tom,

In what is probably a bigger miracle than the Lakers coming back from the 20 point deficiet to beat the Spurs in Game 1, I have actually boxed up the trade items for you both. I have a few Himalaya tourmalines - both pink and green. Don't get too excited - they are not facet grade! While the Lakers were beating the Spurs in gGames 2, I pulled out a light table and sorted thru my Himalaya tourmaline from the last 2-1/2 years since my husband and son were away at the game and I had a few hours of blessed quiet, alone time to play with my rocks. I'm not sure which was more fun - watching the Lakers win 101 to 71 or seeing the neat tourmaline I'd found (ok - that is a total fib - the tourmaline wins any day). Dang you Simon - I'll sure miss having you you as an excuse to go back down to the Himalaya as often. And, I doubt that Chris Rose will bother to write a nobody like me if he ever gets permission to take people back to the actual mine (I hope so). I was talking to more knowledgeable real rock hounds at the Culver City Club who wouldn't be caught dead going to the "dig" at the Lake Henshaw Resort - but who would go bakc to the real Himalaya Mine to dig on the dumps in a heartbeat if Chris ever gets it open again. I guess I can ask Chris the status at the CFMS Show in Ventura in June - if he is willing to talk to me after my posts on LA-Rocks following Simon's farewell announcement.

The trade packs also have a piece of Bishop Garnet in matrix. A guy at the Culver City Club donated some leftovers to the Childen's program. When I scrubbed them with my trusty Bar Keepers Friend and a toothbrucsh, all sorts of nice pumpkin pie colored garnets popped out along with some quartz (they said it was calcite - but the oxalix acid in the Bar Keeps didn't fizz it -so I'm thinking it is quartz). I threw in a few not so great Azusa Fluorites, a Oceanview Mine schorl and a Thursday Mine Lepidolite. Enjoy.

Tom,

As usual, I have misplaced you mailing address. Can you resend it - go to my friend location on your profile and send me a message. I promise not to delete it.

I didn't have any good tourmaline in matrix from the Himalaya. I only have a very few pieces that are almost micromount size. I've been reading up on the mine - rock hounding materials are great bed time reading, There is a California Geology office where you can get old geology magazines for $2.00 with no shipping and they have awesome articles and great pictures. Finally - I get some benefit from my tax dollars. The Himalaya is apparently not really that well known for matrix pieces - the vugs/pockets burst during the formation of the gems, so most either fell off of the walls of the vug and continued their growth in the clay or just formed in the clay to start (this is my newbie rock hound/non-geologist, over-simplifed interpretation of several articles. Any real geologists/miners may not agree - but I welcome any corrections). However, you do end up with really interesting re-healed tourmalines, tourmalines with black cores at the base that then turn into other colors, and doubly-terminated tourmalines. I have one or two curved tourmalines. But then, I have yet to meet a tourmaline I don't like.

Paul, also send me your address - I have a few small surprizes for you.

Next Friday thru Sunday my 12-year-old and I will join the Sierra Peloma Club up in the mountains near Lone Pine. Aout 24 people are going. I'll try to remember to take some pictures and will start a thread with a trip report after I get back.

Ellen the disoragnized and forgetful

Ok, will do. Cool...

I do hope things can be worked out a the himalaya again. If I ever make it down there, I would like to go dig the tailings at the mine, however, I am not to proud to dig a the new Lake Henshaw Resort. I would do that in a heart beat. lol Paul
